Performance. The Company engages in the productions of live theatre performances that include the building of costumes and sets from organic raw materials and designs; original lighting and sound design and musical scores. In fy 2021, most live performances were postponed or cancelled due to the spread of the covid-19 virus and associated government restrictions on business activities and a series of online readings and production and lectures were devised, in addition to a few one-time, outdoor live events. A september fundraiser was presented live, with Company talent as well as visiting artists as well as a halloween live event, each event accommodating 80 to 100 patrons; a series of drive-in movies were shown on site through a collaborative with berkshire international film festival (biff); three live "zoom readings" were presented in november; two productions (martha mitchell calling and emma) were filmed and shown via video; a series of lectures by the founding artistic director were presented via zoom. All online programming was presented for free with donations encouraged; the drive-in movies were pre-paid to biff with a portion of the net proceeds forwarded to s&co. Projects produced were a mix of equity and non-equity productions.
Training -- no in-person programs were offered, and fy21 consisted of a limited number of virtual workshops and classes in linklater voice, the feldenkreis technique, connecting with Shakespeare's text, movement, play & dance, and public speaking offered to theater professionals throughout the world. The 2020 summer intensive was cancelled and no virutal programming offered in its place. The january 2021 month-long intensive was canceled and 8 short virtual workshops were offered in its place, 80 total participants. A total of 16 virtual workshops/classes were offered from may to july 2020, and october 2020 to march 2021.
Education -- fy21 consisted of a reimagining of our education programs. From november of 2020 through april of 2021, we reached approximately 400 students through on-line or hybrid in-person/digital programming. Beginning with our flagship, nationally recognized program the "fall festival of Shakespeare", this year was for our graduating senior classes and involved nearly 50 high school students from 8 different high schools in ny and ma. Each rehearsing a Shakespeare play over zoom or google classroom, performing a pre-recorded festival to share with the public. Our six week Shakespeare in the courts digital "Shakespeare project" program offered 7 adolescent offenders or at risk youth participating in an effective and action-oriented program as alternate to traditional sentencing, which has been celebrated at a white house ceremony and honored as an outstanding community arts program with a gold star award from the mass. Cultural council. Northeast regional tour of Shakespeare furthers classical literacy in 75 communities' schools from Maine to Maryland, this year also went digital and included multiple online workshops for our school communities. Other programs include 5 on-line elementary & middle school residencies, hybrid of in-person and digital spring young Company. Our riotous youth summer theatre program for ages 7-17 as well as our summer conservatory were both cancelled in 2020. Riotous youth to join us again in 2021, summer conservatory in 2022.
