Program areas at SSSS
Senior nutrition program provides made-from-scratch meals to seniors in mason and thurstoncounties via home delivery and at eight Senior nutrition sites. Meals are provided to approximately3,000 seniors at suggested donation of $4 - $8 per meal. Volunteers deliver meals to home-boundseniors. Drivers also check on clients wellness and safety when delivering. Community dining sitesoffer improved nutrition and social interaction for seniors. Meals are overseen by a certified nutritionistand nutrition education is provided at each of the nutrition sites twice each year. If needed, thenutritionist may meet one-on-one with nutrition clients to determine if specialized meals need to beprovided for weight gain or allergies. Over 151,000 meals are provided to seniors each year.
Supportive Services of various types are offered, catering to different needs of the seniorpopulation. Program offerings include a shared housing program called home share which matcheshomeowners and those seeking housing, shiba (state-wide health insurance benefit advisors) whichuses trained volunteers to assist people on medicare to find the most appropriate insurance coveragefor their medical needs, a transportation program that provides rides to urgent appointments forseniors with limited other options and our brighter days program that provides respite Services tofamilies of those living with dementia, alzheimers disease and other cognitive or physical disorders.
Numerous activities provide social connection, learning and enhanced fitness to over 4,000individual seniors. Walk-in activities at our Senior centers are enjoyed by hundreds each day. Classesoffered include academics, recreation, music and wellness. Health and wellness classes focus on fallprevention, healthy movement and are designed with the health needs of seniors in mind. The travelprogram fosters companionship in a group recreation atmosphere providing greater life satisfaction andpurpose.
Transportation Services are provided to seniors living in thurston county that need transportation to essential errands, meal programs, or doctors appointments. Seniors must live or be traveling, outside of the dial-a-lift area.
