Program areas at Scarc (Arc of Sussex County)

Residential programs: located throughout sussex county, Scarc's 22 group homes and 4 supervised apartments provide the support of trained staff and meet the needs of individuals with a wide range of challenges. Between 2 and 5 individuals live in homes located within neighborhoods in 13 different municipalities. Efforts to secure quality of life for all individuals who find their home at Scarc are guided by plans comprised of carefully crafted, personalized goals and objectives. Individuals participate in the care of their home and many other activities designed to foster a sense of warmth, stability, and friendship amongst housemates. Each home is as unique as the individuals who call it home.
Community services: Scarc provides respite and recreation services designed to provide a break from caregiving for families and provide age-appropriate leisure activities for participants. Agency hired respite is a service which provides temporary relief to families dealing with the stress and strain of providing care for a family member with a developmental disability. The just us kids program serves children from 5 to 15, and offers activities which are designed to reflect the interest and age group of participants as well as supporting socialization and community inclusion. The teen scene program serves youth ages 15 to 21, and offers participants the opportunity for age appropriate socialization and activities. Self-hired respite gives families the option of hiring someone they choose themselves, or already know and trust, to provide care for their child. Scarc also provides a wide variety of recreational community inclusionactivities. Individuals may participate in large group activities such as swimming, bowling, basketball, and dances; while other activities are available to support a broad range of interests and abilities such as cooking, bingo, weaving, dining out, and plays and cultural events. In addition, Scarc supports individuals participating in special olympics and offers summer experience, a two week summer program.
Day programs: Scarc offers seven programs where individuals with a wide range of support needs may access day habilitation, prevocational training, and career planning. The eickmann center offers individuals community-based activities as well as the opportunity to build workplace skills, while the clark center and the james dykstra center offers individuals an opportunity to learn skills related to activities of daily living, self-help, and socialization. Individuals in our harvest home foods program operate two food pantries serving over 900 sussex county families. Individuals in our explorers programs spend every day out and about in the community. They engage in a wide variety of activities including educational tours of local businesses and museums, volunteering at our beautiful sussex county parks, and visiting local nursing homes. The patty dolan senior center provides supports to individuals who wish to "retire" from employment or more intensive day activities. Individuals participate in an array of leisure activities including crafts, cooking, shopping, and pursuing individual hobbies or interests. The sparta center, the only program of its kind in sussex county, provides services to individuals with significant support needs or who may be considered medically fragile. A registered nurse is on staff each day.
