Program areas at Sarasota County Bar Association
A mock trial presentation for approximately 200 high school students involving over 100 member volunteers and a mock trial competition for high school students.
Luncheons, dinners, banquets, socials: opportunities to improve collegiality among members, judiciary, and other constitutional officers, along with promoting practice development, are provided by offering a variety of functions during the year. Events are often open to other business professionals.
Continuing legal education: educational opportunities are offered to members at monthly practice area section meetings; topics with a focus on ethics & professionalism are presented to members and occasionally to legal support staff; workshops with judges and other court personnel to improve the administration of justice are offered throughout the year.
Law and Sarasota: a collaborative effort between the scba and the education channel, "law and Sarasota" is a series of 30 minute televised programs, airing at least twenty times during a period of nine months about legal topics of interest to the citizens of Sarasota; scholarship program: in 2007, the scba created a scholarship fund in partnership with the community foundation of Sarasota County to provide scholarships of up to $5,000 to qualified law students. Students are selected from Florida law schools by the scba. Eligibility is based on need, merit and qualifying criteria. Candidates interview with area law firms and/or governmental agencies that have agreed to employ the student for 10 week summer internships. Once approved, successful applications are referred to the community foundation who awards the scholarship to the student's law school to further his/her legal education. Additionally, scba awarded a $1,000 scholarship to a booker law academy high school student.
