Sanctuary Forest is a land trust whose mission is to conserve the Mattole River watershed and surrounding areas for wildlife habitat and aesthetic, spiritual and intrinsic values, in cooperation with our diverse community. Flowing wild and free through. The Mattole River begins its journey to the sea from its headwaters located approximately 200 miles north of San Francisco, near the town of Whitethorn on California’s Lost Coast. Draining 300 miles of rugged mountains and forests, it flows sixty-six mil.

Program areas at Sanctuary Forest

Stewardship-demonstrate ecologically sound land management through implementation of stewardship projects. Monitor stream restoration projects, conservation easement monitoring and legal defense, promote water conservation and develop demonstration projects. Install water storage systems with forbearance agreements.
Education - promote enjoyment and understanding of temporate rainforest ecosystem and ecologically sound land management. Summer hike series, nick's interns, scholarship program. 6,000 grant is for scholarship program.
Land and water conservation-protect key lands and water flows through fee acquisition or conservation easements contributing to a healthy mattole river watershed ecosystem.
Collaboration - create and build conservation partnerships in the mattole watershed and beyond. Implement mattole watershed plan with mattole river and range partnership.
