The Rural Behavioral Health Institute strives to lower suicide rates for rural youth through the creation of a school-based mental health system. This includes implementing universal screening and providing comprehensive mental health services. In FY2022, RBHI accomplished important goals, such as screening 3,700 students in 19 middle and high schools across 9 Montana counties for suicide risk and offering same-day mental health care to 120 high-risk students.

Program areas at The Rural Behavioral Health Institute

RBHIs most significant accomplishments were the following:a.During the 2022-2023 school year (7/1/2022-June 20, 2023), 11,213 grade students in 62 Montana schools participated in the Screening Linked to Care (SLTC) intervention.b.100% of participating students had parental consent. All students completed 100% of the assessments administered.c.912 unique students with recent high risk of suicide received same-day follow-up care.d.290 referrals to the organizations newly instituted case management program, which offers short-term care and coordination with students and families to remove barriers to care. Due to demand, RBHI hired a second Case Manager in March of 2023.e.65 students received bridge psychiatric care, which began in December 2022. Bridge services include diagnostic evaluation and initiation of a treatment plan. For the 31 students received treatment by the Medical Director and board-certified Child Psychiatrist for at least 3 weeks, there was a 40% reduction in depression symptoms and a 36% reduction in anxiety symptoms compared to students original screening scores.
