Program areas at Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer
The Rivkin Centers grant program uses a seed funding approach and is known throughout the world for launching new research and new researchers. For the 2022 funding period, the Rivkin Center received 113 applications for its Pilot Study and Scientific Scholar Awards. From that pool of international applicants, we funded some of the worlds most innovative science and promising researchers, awarding $510k in scientific grants to six researchers in the United States and one in British Columbia, Canada. Ovarian cancer is underfunded by federal funding agencies when compared to other cancers, despite it still having no universal screening tool and being the most deadly gynecological cancer. For every dollar invested by the Rivkin Center, our awardees, on average, leverage another $17 from other funding sources to further their ovarian cancer research.
The Rivkin Center Education Team is committed to providing equitable access to education about ovarian and breast cancer. We do this by:Growing our team of instructors and survivors to reflect different lived experiences and perspectivesSharing the latest science in an easy and memorable wayDeveloping new partnerships and reaching new communitiesDelivering our workshops virtually and in-personIn 2022, we held 82 workshops, reaching 3,300 people with the help of 40 Rivkin Center instructors and survivors. Forty-two percent of our programming reached underserved and high-risk communities. We also released an updated curriculum that better explains ovarian and breast cancer, how they affect different populations, why there are disparities in risk and outcomes, and what you can do to support your health. We also soft-launched our Workplace Education Program, bringing our workshops to companies to help them have a healthier workforce. Were also reaching more college students thanks to our now-popular virtual workshop option. The Rivkin Center program continues to empower people to Know Your Body and be their own best advocate, so that, if necessary, they are treated earlier and have better outcomes.
