Program areas at Polson Museum
Regular, ongoing work to maintain, update and create new permanent and temporary exhibits pertaining to the history of Grays Harbor County, Washington. Such work includes the active maintenance, acquisition and cataloging of historical collections for exhibition, educational and research purposes. Work also includes the general administration and operation of the museum. Due to COVID-19 pandemic closure requirements imposed for the second time in late 2020, the Polson decided to remain closed until August, 2021 to complete major interior restoration work first begun in the March 2020 mandated closure. This effort allowed us to fully restore the public areas of our 1924 mansion.
Photographic scanning and archiving. This multi-year effort continued with more catch up to process new collections that have come into the museum's permanent collection. Images were scanned, identified and sleeved for proper storage as well as information added to our collections database.
Work to restore "Hubble House" a 1915 Japanesque Craftsman bungalow at 1607 Riverside Ave., Hoquiam, WA continued despite volunteers and staff devoting more time to restoration of our mansion's interior. Major projects here during 2021 included the rough-in plumbing and a start to installing all new electrical throughout the house. The kitchen porch was also re-built during this time. When completed, the building will serve as collections storage for the museum's paper-based collections, be available as a public meeting space in the common areas, and be a dedicated woodworking shop in the garage.
