Pirates Charities is committed to strengthening the community through the power of Pittsburgh Pirates baseball, with a focus on youth baseball and softball, military appreciation, mental health awareness, and cancer support. The organization grows the games of baseball and softball by hosting skills and coaching clinics, donating equipment to local programs, and improving playing fields. Pirates Charities also funds community health initiatives throughout Pittsburgh in partnership with other nonprofit organizations to provide support and resources to communities.

Program areas at Pirates Charities

Youth baseball and softball. The fields for kids program provided financial support to improve youth baseball and softball facilities via matching grants to nonprofit organizations and local government entities operating baseball and softball programs. Pirates Charities also supported the Pirates rbi (reviving baseball in inner cities) program, which serves nearly 2,000 inner-city youth in pittsburgh. Support also was provided to area miracle league organizations who provide youth and adult athletes with various disabiliites an accessible place to play so they can enjoy the sport of baseball. In addition, Pirates Charities donated equipment to a variety of local baseball and softball programs.
Military appreciation. Pirates Charities supported a number of local nonprofits who care for and serve veterans and active-duty service personnel in the pittsburgh region, which has one of the largest veteran populations in the country. In addition to financial contributions, unique and memorable experiences and programming were provided through the year to veterans, active-duty service personnel and their families. Pirates Charities also hosted an on-field baseball clinic at pnc park for local military heroes.
Community health. In partnership with other nonprofit organizations, Pirates Charities provided support and resources including unique and memorable experiences throughout the year for children and families impacted by cancer and other significant health issues or developmental disabilities. In addition, Pirates Charities continued to support the operation of a mobile mental health program in partnership with allegheny health network called chill mobile, which has served more than 12,000 students and staff in the pittsburgh region with mental wellness curriculum.
Pirates Charities provided a response to specific community needs during 2023.
