Pikeville Medical Center's construction renovation of 13,400 square feet of space to house eastern Kentucky's only children's hospital was completed during fy 22. The new mettu children's hospital opened in december 2021 and offers both inpatient and outpatient pediatric services. The children's hospital fills a gap in providing much needed pediatric healthcare for the region, allowing more families to stay close to home for specialized pediatric care, thus greatly reducing the financial burden that comes with traveling to hospitals hundreds of miles away. The children's hospital is staffed by pediatric hospitalists and pediatric nurses specially trained in inpatient pediatric care. Inpatient services are located in an 8,130 sq ft area consisting of a family-friendly waiting room, 10 private patient rooms (including two isolation rooms), a consultation room, a treatment room, medication room, nourishment room and more. The outpatient service area is located in a 5,290 sq ft area consisting of separate sick and well child waiting rooms, check-in and registration areas, 13 exam rooms, a medication room, and nurse's station. This new pediatric facility has provided pmc with the capacity to launch a multi-specialty spectrum of care for pediatric patients. Pediatric cardiology, pulmonology, bmi, and plastics specialty services are now provided through a cooperative agreement with the university of Kentucky children's hospital at the mettu children's hospital located on pmc's main campus in Pikeville, ky. These new pediatric services bridge the gap to ensure all children and families have adequate access to specialized pediatric care. The capital investment in the children's hospital is more than $6.3 million.the pmc appalachian valley autism (ava) Center is a certified autism Center by the international board of credentialing and continuing education standards spectrum disorder (asd). As the first comprehensive Center of its kind in eastern Kentucky, the ava Center offers applied behavior analysis (aba) therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and feeding therapies for children on the autism spectrum between the ages of 2 and 12. The program strives to identify children at the earliest signs of detection, provide integrated care to support the best possible quality of life for children with asd and their families, and help children with asd reach their full potential. The specialized early intervention and treatment provided by the specifically trained therapists at the ava Center has proven effective in increasing communication skills, improving attention, and decreasing problem behaviors. The pmc ava Center Pikeville campus occupies more than 25,000 sq ft of space in the health & well-being learning Center and has the capacity to serve up to 100 learners. Due to an extensive wait list of more than 500 learners in need of services, pmc has recently expanded the ava Center to a second location in prestonsburg, ky. The ava Center prestonsburg campus is a newly renovated 5,500 square foot satellite Center that features an ocean theme with 12 multiple learning rooms, a feeding room and two specially designed sensory stimulation activity rooms. This Center will allow pmc therapists to provide services for 24 additional learners, offering the same specialized services that are available at the Pikeville location while accommodating the growing need for autism services in eastern Kentucky. The total investment in renovations for the ava Center prestonsburg campus is $2.1 million.pikeville Medical Center has established the eastern Kentucky advanced women's care Center to meet the unique health needs of women. The experienced obstetrics-gynecology team of seven ob/gyn physicians is the largest on-call, board certified ob/gyn physician team in eastern Kentucky. The trusted and compassionate women's care Center physicians offer well screenings, family planning, pregnancy and postpartum care, minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries utilizing the da vinci robotic surgical system, and menopausal care. The women's care Center completed 7,449 patient visits during fy 2022the job of Pikeville Medical Center's primary care team is much more than treating you when you are sick, it's about encouraging preventative care and a healthy lifestyle. It is also about managing care if there is a chronic health need and opening doors to specialized services when they are needed. To improve access to Pikeville Medical Center's primary care team; including pediatrics, adult primary care, and urgent care specialists, pmc recently opened the new urgent care & family wellness Center. The renovated 14,600 square foot of space is in a convenient location and includes 14 youth themed exam rooms, 25 adult/urgent care exam rooms, 14 provider workstations, nurse stations, an on-site laboratory for specimen collection, on-site x-ray services, and reception/waiting rooms. The urgent care at Pikeville north is open 12 hours a day seven days a week to treat injuries, common Medical conditions, and illnesses. The total capital investment in the urgent care & family wellness Center equipment and renovations is $3.7 million.the pmc orthopedic surgery & sports medicine institute of eastern Kentucky, located on the sixth floor of the pmc clinic building, is staffed with highly trained surgeons, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and numerous support personnel. Three orthopedic surgeons focus on providing the latest advancements in orthopedic surgery for hips, knees, and other orthopedic related issues, while being devoted to preventing, diagnosing, and treating disorders of the bones,

Cardiac services:the Pikeville Medical Center heart and vascular institute of eastern Kentucky (hvi) is accredited by the american heart association and the american college of cardiology in fields such as heart attack treatment, cardiac cath lab percutaneous coronary intervention (pci) accreditation, chest pain with pci and more. The heart plays a critical role in the overall well-being of the human body; the devoted staff at the hvi offers a wide range of services to address various cardiovascular concerns, from routine check-ups to the management of complex heart conditions, to guide the patient through every step of their heart health journey. Hvi is known throughout the region and state of Kentucky for its expertise and experience in areas including coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, and valvular disorders. Cardiac services offered by pmc include general cardiology, invasive cardiology, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular/endovascular surgery, echocardiography, and cardiac rehabilitation.the pmc heart and vascular institute has recently completed a monumental $35.2 million capital renovation and expansion. The first phase of the project included the installation of three new state-of-the-art interventional cardiac catheterization (cath) labs, bringing the hospital's cath lab count to more than any other hospital in Kentucky. The original 26,000 square feet of space occupied by the heart and vascular institute was fully renovated allowing for functional flow of a new registration area for improved patient access, an additional 14,000 square feet of space located on the 2nd floor was renovated and a two-story addition of space that exceeds 9,000 square feet was added and occupied by cardiac support services. The project also included construction of two additional electrophysiology cath labs, which are hybrid labs, allowing the rooms to be quickly converted into surgical suites if the patient's condition requires. In addition, the renovated space contains six pre/post-operative bays along with a multipurpose room for case conferences. Pmc is the first hospital in Kentucky to offer a new advanced "arterial thrombectomy" device. This device, the penumbra lightning bolt 7, was created to aid physicians in extracting blood clots quickly and efficiently from peripheral arteries. These types of blood clots oftentimes require invasive open surgery or can result in amputation. The minimally invasive lightning bolt 7 system uses a computer-aided clot detection technology that modulates aspiration, which is designed to speed up clot removal while leaving healthy blood circulating.at the pmc heart and vascular institute of eastern Kentucky a specialized team of surgeons offer a minimally invasive approach to treat aneurysms, including the abdominal aortic aneurysm (aaa), which can be fatal if left untreated. An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a bulging, weakened area in the wall of a patient's aorta, the largest artery in the body, responsible for carrying oxygenated blood from the heart throughout the body. Vascular surgeons at the hvi now have the ability to perform an advanced endovascular aortic aneurysm procedure which is a less invasive approach to treat and repair aaa, this advancement has revolutionized the treatment of abdominal aneurysmal disease allowing patients to return home the day after the procedure; whereas in years past aaa treatment involved an extended hospital stay and months of recovery. The minimally invasive procedure is performed through a inch incision where the damage to the aorta is repaired to establish a stable channel for blood flow and preventing the aneurysm from potentially rupturing.due to pmc's commitment to providing exceptional cardiac and endovascular care, patients no longer have to travel hundreds of miles for advanced treatment. Imaging services:pikeville Medical Center's imaging services division includes the modalities of diagnostic imaging, nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance imaging (mri), computed tomography (ct), positron emission tomography (pet), mammography, and ultrasound. Pmc's imaging services has received three-year accreditation from the american college of radiology, recognized as the gold standard in diagnostic imaging. This accreditation certifies the imaging services division's commitment to image quality, equipment performance, safety standards for staff and patients, quality assurance and quality control programs, as well as strict personnel qualifications for both physicians and technologists. Pmc continually invests in the most up to date digital diagnostic and interventional imaging technology to detect and treat diseases. Board certified radiologists work with skilled technologists and nurses to provide the highest quality diagnostic and interventional services in a caring and efficient manner to patients of all ages. Interventional radiology (ir) is a rapidly growing field of medicine that utilizes modern imaging technology such as ultrasound, ct, x-ray, and mri to guide minimally invasive surgical procedures to treat diseases in most every organ system in the body. These advanced procedures are performed at pmc by three interventional radiologists, specially trained with expertise in radiology and minimally invasive procedures. Ir offers an advanced alternative to traditional surgical procedures; with a high success rate, ir procedures have become an increasingly popular option for referring physicians and patients who require diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, which through traditional treatment methods would typically require hospital stays and longer recovery times. Pmc's ir physicians treat various conditions, including cancer, vascular diseases, and chronic pain. Advancements in ir are particularly useful to oncologists, from diagnosing cancer to developing appropriate treatment plans. Pmc ir is also equipped to treat patients suffering from osteoporosis with kyphoplasty, an outpatient procedure where cement is used to stabilize fractured vertebra and restore some of the vertebra's lost height caused by osteoporosis. In many patients, the kyphoplasty procedure drastically reduces pain, which, in turn, can eliminate or reduce the need to use pain medication. Patients from across the region are referred to pmc's ir department to receive the most advanced treatment and specialized procedures within the recently renovated space that contains three ir suites, nine pre-operative and post-operative bays, two outpatient rooms and a central nurse's station. The state-of-the-art technology currently utilized within imaging services includes two linear accelerators, one 32-slice large bore ct scanner, two 64-slice ct scanners, two dual-source 128-slice ct scanners, a digital pet/ct scanner, a spect/ct scanner, two 1.5t open mris, a 3.0t open mri, a d-spect cardiac imaging system, two 3d mammography systems and three fully equipped interventional radiology suites.pmc has purchased two varian rapidarc true beam linear accelerators. The true beam radiotherapy systems provide a variety of treatment techniques to address a broad range of cancer cases, in addition to allowing pmc to deliver lifesaving radiation two to eight times faster than conventional forms of radiotherapy. Advanced imaging and high precision dosage control with the latest true beam technology ensure radiation delivery conformality with built in patient safety features that allow clinicians to navigate the complexities of radiation therapy treatment delivery with confidence. The capital investment in the varian true beam linear accelerator equipment and installation related renovation is projected to total $7.3 million. Pmc's imaging services has recently reached another milestone by performing the region's first pet scan designed specifically to detect prostate cancer. This latest in pet scan technology utilizing illuccix radioactive isotopes on the newly installed philips vereos digital pet/ct scanner is particularly beneficial to urologists treating patients who are at high risk of or suspected of having prostate cancer by offering an advanced tool to expedite a cancer diagnosis and treatment, leading to improved patient outcomes.

Pmc purchased the combination stealthstation surgical navigation system and o-arm 2d/3d imaging system during fy22. The stealthstation enables precise tracking of the location of surgical instruments throughout a procedure by introducing the most advanced version of stealth technology, a combination of hardware, software, tracking algorithms, image data merging, and specialized instruments. The stealthstation and o-arm systems are used in a variety of procedures including spine, cranial, orthopedics and trauma. The systems' high quality, versatile imaging provides enhanced 3d visibility, in addition to surgical feedback needed to guide timely clinical decision making enabling advanced surgical approaches to improve patient outcomes. The capital investment in the stealthstation & o-arm systems totaled $1.2 million. Pmc's critical care units (ccu) are comprised of 71 total beds and staffed by board-certified physician specialists and dedicated staff to provide 24/7 care to patients with a wide variety of severe illness or injury. Pmc has 69 adult ventilators and 35 pediatric/nicu ventilators immediately available for service and is one of the few hospitals in the state and the only hospital in the region to provide the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ecmo) life support. Patients requiring ecmo have a severe, life-threatening illness that prevents their heart or lungs from working properly. This technologically advanced lifesaving machine replaces the function of the heart and lungs, and pumps blood from the patient's body to an oxygenator that works as an artificial lung. Pikeville Medical Center's inpatient physical rehabilitation hospital is a comprehensive program dedicated to helping patients who are disabled by disease or injury.
