Program areas at Perry Institute for Marine Science
Coral restoration: the program is aimed at restoring populations of critically endangered coral species in the wider carribean region and conducting research to advance the Science of coral restoration.
Improved fisheries management: the Institute is conducting research aimed at improving the management of both traditional bahamian fisheries (nassau grouper, queen conch) and emerging fisheries such as parrotfish, and bioprospecting for natural products derived from sponges, sea fans and other organisms. This research is aimed at promoting sustainable harvests that preserve the viability of harvested stocks and promote ecosystem health. We are also engaging local communities to promote complaince with fisheries regulations and other best practices to minimize impacts of fishing to ecosystems.
Coral reef assessment: the Institute is assessing coral reef health throughout the bahamas to identify key threats to coral reef health and to provide scientific support for the planning, management and evaluation of the efficacy of Marine protected areas. This program also aims to build capacity for conducting coral reef health assessments by hosting training workshops and educating the general public through various media.
Community conservation education and action program provides, education, outreach and community engagement programs that compliment the institutes research programs. This program is aimed at developing conservation leaders and promoting conservation actions through targeted communications, training programs to build conservation capacity in the bahamas, and working directly with stakeholders like fishers and divers to promote positive practices that promote healthy Marine ecosystems.
