Program areas at One Iowa
In 2022, One Iowa set record numbers in the amount of outreach and training provided to the surrounding community. With 105 trainings completed throughout the state of Iowa and over 5,000 individual attendees, our trainings continue to make a huge impact in our communities. Our training includes information on lgbtq identities, disparities faced by the lgbtq community, and best practices for lgbtq inclusion. Our primary goal through training is expand state-wide knowledge on lgbtq issues, equip attendees with vital information, and empower allies to create safer spaces for lgbtq individuals in workplaces, healthcare settings, and nonprofits.
Throughout the course of 2022, we graduated 17 lgbtq leaders from across the state of Iowa from our One Iowa lgbtq leadership institute. The leadership institute is a program that uplifts and empowers lgbtq folks from across the state as they serve the lgbtq community. Alumni have gone on to write books, start nonprofits, change jobs, join boards, and hold elected office. This is an outstanding program because it builds One Iowa's capacity dramatically by developing relationships with lgbtq folks throughout the state, empowering cohort members to start lgbtq initiatives in their city and build a strong network of volunteers and donors.
Our second outstanding service accomplishment lies in the work we completed to share the findings of our 2021 Iowa lgbtq health needs assessment. This assessment, completed in partnership with the Iowa department of health and human services, focuses on issues facing the lgbtq community in the state of Iowa. We received and analyzed responses from over 800 iowans and gathered information about mental health, healthcare, state-wide needs for support. This amount of specific information about the lgbtq community in the state of Iowa is unprecedented, and in 2022, we focused on sharing that information with community partners, healthcare providers, and state agencies through training, conference presentations, and targeted outreach. This program meaningfully moved the needle on lgbtq healthcare by providing concrete information on the real needs of our Iowa lgbtq community.
