Program areas at Oakland Natives Give Back Fund

The Back and on track (bot) program provides a multi-phased and tiered approach to mitigate "learning loss" resulting from the covid-19 pandemic and its drastic impact on consistent student attendance. Through the entire school year, the program served 72 students from 8 different partner schools. The program yielded remarkable results by incentivizing these students with a monthly reward of $500, and schools witnessed improvement in their attendance, engagement, and academic performance. The weekly lessons that focused on social and emotional learning (sel), attendance support, career & college readiness, case management, and wraparound services have proven to be invaluable. The scheduled home visits and family support have strengthened the bond between schools and the families of these students. By working together, we created a nurturing and supportive environment that fosters academic excellence and overall well-being.
Everyday counts attendance challenge (edcac) is aimed at eliminating chronic absenteeism by raising awareness, using external motivation (ie. Incentives) to improve the attendance rates of k-12 youth. There were 153 students within the ousd student body who participated in the edcac challenge and 36 winners received awards during the 2022-2023 school year.
Girls equity movement (gems) aims to catalyze change by equipping young women with the networking, training, and leadership skills they need to change the world. Despite the post pandemic challenges, the gems program continues to thrive. This year we welcomed our fourth cohort of gems for the 2022-23 academic year. Twenty gems were recruited from bay area high-schools in Oakland, alameda, hayward, vallejo, san leandro, and beyond. During the summer and fall, gems engaged in professional development activities, community events, and social emotional learning experiences. Guest speakers joined us from airtable, the fashion institute of design & merchandising (fidm), nasa, and a number of small businesses from around the bay area.
