Program areas at Nyc Kids Rise
In fy23, Nyc Kids Rise continued its citywide expansion and introduced a second cohort of kindergarteners across Nyc public schools into the save for college program. This is the second year of citywide operations, and the sixth year of operations for the program. By the end of the year, the program recognized 143,066 total active participants, 71,917 of which were new participants. Each newly enrolled student received an Nyc scholarship account with an initial $100. Students have the opportunity to earn additional scholarship dollars when their parent/guardians complete additional steps (the building blocks) including activating and viewing their child's Nyc scholarship account. During this fiscal year, Nyc Kids Rise deposited more than $11.2 million into participating students' Nyc scholarship accounts, including seed, rewards, and community scholarships.nyc Kids Rise worked to provide capacity building, technical assistance and education to families, schools, and communities. Specifically, Nyc Kids Rise designed and implemented family-facing workshops where families could learn more about the platform and receive assistance to take the foundational steps in the program. In total, 58 virtual workshops were held for families and the Nyc Kids Rise team participated in 57 in-person events to provide information to families and provide technical assistance to complete foundational steps. Nyc Kids Rise offered professional development and capacity building to elementary schools across new york city to support them in their efforts to use the program as a tool for college and career readiness and worked in partnership with Nyc public schools to support schools in implementing key pieces of the save for college program calendar. By the end of the fiscal year, over 70 professional development sessions were held for school stakeholders with over 1,300 attendees participating across all sessions. In addition, Nyc Kids Rise launched the district liaison learning community to further capacity building efforts at the district-level to familiarize district liaisons with program resources, provide turnkey communications / tools, amplify diverse models of the district liaison role, and create space for peer to peer learning. During the fiscal year, Nyc public schools also developed a fifth grade financial curriculum extension for the pilot school district.during this time period, Nyc Kids Rise continued to prototype new kinds of community scholarships demonstrating how various institutions and organizations can leverage the platform to support students across the city. This included the $1.2m east flatbush + canarsie community scholarship and the $1m harlem community scholarship as well as the development and implementation of the first-ever recurring community scholarship, koeppel kares community scholarship.
