Program areas at NHCO
Food & emergency assistance - nhco assisted 25,044 families that experienced hardship, crisis, or poverty. 35 families received disaster relief after fire or flood. The top two reasons people sought help at nhco this year were for hunger and general financial hardship. 2,085 families received food and emergency help; 1,106 families received food from one of three nhco food pantries, including over 4,433 pounds of produce harvested from nhco's organic garden; 180 households received utility financial assistance to prevent shut-offs or restore service and 816 received help with applying for utility grant programs; 113 households received housing assistance including rent and security deposit.
Sharing projects - a total of 983 low-income families received assistance through nhco's seasonal sharing projects, whereby items are donated by caring individuals and groups and then distributed to people in need: 173 families received utility credits through sharing winter warmth; 306 children and 64 adults received a new winter coat; 538 families received a complete thanksgiving dinner; 314 families received a complete spring dinner; 865 children received new toys, games and other gifts for the holidays; 697 children received new backpacks and school supplies; 485 households received personal care products; and 345 families received spring cleaning products.
Support and resources - 484 individuals received vita tax preparation services; 28 un or underemployed individuals were provided career counseling; 50 individuals received a 30 minute legal consultation through nhco's ask the attorney program and 8 individuals received a one year legalshield membership; 13 adult students received educational assistance grants to continue their post-secondary education. Senior services 416 seniors received 9,148 services including transportation, home safety checks, food delivery, yard work, and snow shoveling; 196 seniors took 6,116 rides on nhco's free rides for seniors shuttles.
Volunteer services - 641 volunteers provided service to neighbors in need.
Transportation assistance - nhco helped low-income families with transportation needs through direct assistance. Individuals received transportation assistance in one of the following ways: providing financial assistance for car repairs, insurance payments, car payments or down payments; providing bus passes, gas cards and fees for ride sharing services; aaa membership and car seats, if needed; and providing individual consultations and referrals.
