Program areas at New York Live Arts

New York Live Arts had a critically acclaimed 2021-22 season including four bessie award nominations among ten commissioned artists. Live Arts produced eight main stage presentations including Live feed and the randjelovic/stryker resident commissioned artist that brought in an audience (virtual and in-person) of nearly 7,945 to Live Arts. Due to the covid-19 pandemic regulations, the bill t. jones/arnie zane company experienced limited scope of work to tour with. The company presented its work in-person and digitially, to approximately 6,500 audience members. During the company's 40th year, thirty-three performances in Arizona, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Washington & Wyoming, united states. The company was commissioned by the park avenue armory to create a New work, deep blue sea, which had been postponed during the pandemic and finally had its premiere in fall 2021 to ten (10) soldout performances of approximately 1,000 audience members each, they toured the recently premiered afterwardsness to gymnasiums throughout Massachusetts and to the northrup auditorium in minneapolis, Minnesota, where it was co-presented by the walker art center. Due to omicron and the continued pandemic, all of the company's january tours were canceled which resulted in the loss of two states and three performances being canceled or postponed.new York Live Arts continued to support the work of its fifth resident commissioned artist, raja feather kelly, through december 2021 with a technical residency followed by performances, including one (1) asl interpreted performance. We also continued support of 2021-2022, the sixth resident commissioned artist faye driscoll, with their residency and the development of their New work. Due to covid-19 pandemic, their preimier in 2022 was postponed and will be premierd in fiscal year 2023. Live Arts commissioned New work from some of the most forward-thinking independent artists of our time in our theatre and in off-site locations in nyc and online including milka djordjevich, daniel alexander jones, raja feather kelly, jaamil olawale kosoko, molly lieber & eleanor smith, shamel pitts, colleen thomas, sage ni'ja whitson, christopher williams, raphael xavier & abby zbikowski. The Live feed residency program is a laboratory for the development of New commissioned work directed to our theater. Emerging and mid-career artists selected by the Live Arts curatorial staff are offered 140 hours of rehearsal time over two years, followed by moderated discussions in the first year. In the second year, we premier their newly created performance piece in our theater. Along with performance fees, each commissioned artist enjoyed a week-long technical residency in New York Live Arts' theater, an unusual opportunity to refine a work for the stage. New York Live Arts served as an artistic home to more than 200 emerging and mid-career artist. Live Arts also co-presented a week-long festival with the max festival, titled max Live: 2021 the neuroverse which welcomed performing artists from across the globe, scholars and visual artists.due to the covid-19 pandemic, we had to pivot our annual Live artery platform for presenters and Arts professionals to a virtual format. We invited artists into the venue to film their work-in-progress showings to get their work in front of presenters from all over the world. We brought our fresh tracks program back Live in summer 2021 with two performances of five emerging artists: jessica cook, john maria gutierrez, lilach orenstein, majesty royale & maleek washington.we closed our fy22 season with our annual pride: the house party including Live performances in our studios and theatre. We hosted a queer marketplace in our lobby. We commissioned artist gio black peter to create a mural on our ford foundation lobby wall.new York Live Arts' Live core program is dedicated to provide artist with the tools, support and professional development they need to truly excel. The program draws on the resources of the instittuion to make it possible for artists to connect with larger audiences, raise funds to support their work, and augment the visibility of dance in New York. Enrollment with an affordable $100 for a full year of unlimited access to marketing services, inclusion in Live Arts' e-blasts and print programs, development and fundraising guidance, ticket discounts and access to masterclasses and workshops.new York Live Arts had an ongoing partnership with the james baldwin school for expeditionary learning, focused on high school students who have previously experienced school as unresponsive to their needs as individuals. Designed to broaden the artistic experience and provide two full semesters of course work, a class of six to eight students worked with a teaching artist recruited from our bill t. jones/arnie zane alumni to develop personal oral history into performance. Along with its robust touring schedule, bill t jones/arnie zane company had numerous masteclasses, and workshops at loyola marymount university. Several company members taught masterclasses through zoom. We built a studyguide for our partner, loyola marymount college around deep blue sea for middle school students and worked through zoom to create it and teach a pilot program in los angeles, ca.
