Human and civil rights: nif works to safeguard human and civil rights including in the occupied palestinian territories and to strengthen public trust in and support for democratic rights and values. Israel's high court of justice ruled that electricity is a constitutional right linked to the right to life and health, in response to a petition by nif grantees the association for civil rights in Israel (acri) and physicians for human rights Israel (phri). The ruling compelled the government-owned Israel electric corporation (iec) to amend its criteria for disconnecting a customer's power and bars the company from doing so as a means of debt collection.following a years-long campaign by a group of nif-supported orthodox lgbtq organizations (havruta, bat-kol, and shoval), the ministry of health director issued a memorandum prohibiting lgbtq "conversion therapy" treatments. The nif-funded joint lobbyist for asylum-seeker organizations successfully mobilized lawmakers to prevent the renewal of the so-called "infiltration law," which penalized foreigners, even those fleeing from danger, who enter the country without a permit.
Democratic infrastructure advances democratic society in Israel through work in three areas: supporting grassroots movements; formulating New ideas & policies; and cultivating leaders & leadership networks. Examples include:advocating for inclusion in public spaces omdim beyachad-naqef ma'an (standing together), a jewish-arab grassroots movement, fought successfully to make the university of haifa's campus entirely bilingual, including university forms and signage in both arabic and hebrew. Activists from omdim beyachad have launched a similar campaign at tel aviv university. Bilingual services not only increase accessibility but also convey a message of inclusion. Fighting extremism in the digital sphere the efforts of nif grantee fakereporter, which works to disrupt extremist groups on social media platforms, led to the closure of dozens of telegram and whatsapp groups created to incite violence. Cultivating palestinian-israeli leadersshatil, nif's training and empowerment arm, is creating a cadre of young leaders from within Israel's arab society by providing them with the training and know-how to advocate for their communities and advance policy change. Shatil completed one such training for 20 young palestinian-israeli ngo staffers and activists in collaboration with the national committee for heads of arab local authorities (nchala) and is launching a New cohort.rapid response grants to respond swiftly and nimbly to urgent needs and to leverage opportunities as they arise. Examples include:hashomer hatzair -- $20,000 to help operate a refugee center in przemysl, poland, near the border with ukraine, and to help it purchase and transport food, medicine, and essential equipment to border crossings and to safe houses inside ukraine. Nivcharot -- $30,000 to promote representation of ultra-orthodox women in politics, advance haredi feminist discourse, and raise awareness about women's exclusion. Israel religious action center -- $10,000 to fight the deportation of 140 children who are israeli citizens but have a parent who is not (in most cases the mother). The aguda - the association for lgbtq equality in Israel -- $15,000 to operate an open house to support the lgbtq+ community in palestinian-israeli society and to provide palestinian-israeli lgbtqs with support adapted to their needs and language. Mehazkim -- $10,000 to continue promoting a message of peace between jews and arabs and hope for a common future through billboards in central Israel and on bridges around the country. Association for civil rights in Israel -- $20,000 for work to present to the public the full array of threats to democracy posed by the New government. Rabbis for human rights -- $10,000 to set up a mini site that complies real-time reports of settler violence during the olive harvest. Adva center -- $10,000 to cover the salary for a researcher that is examining the effects of the climate crisis on vulnerable populations. March for equality -- $10,000 to support a nationwide march for equality between the periphery and central Israel. Half the funds were allocated to garnering support for the march from arab/palestinian citizens of Israel.
Social and economic justice: one of nif's long-term goals is to reduce social and economic gaps by empowering Israel's most disadvantaged citizens. Nif works with grantee organizations to promote workable policies and programs addressing poverty, homelessness, unemployment, and urban decay in low-income communities, especially in the geographic and social periphery. The knesset economic affairs committee agreed to suspend the eviction of more than 1,000 israelis from public housing after intervention by nif grantee the public housing forum. The forum also successfully compelled a state-owned housing company to unfreeze the bank accounts of already evicted tenants.
Nif works to advance a society in Israel that is truly shared among its residents, one that values social unity and rejects racism and discrimination against minorities. Israel's ministry of transportation placed bus stops in unrecognized bedouin villages in the negev, among the poorest and most neglected communities in the country, following a campaign by nif grantees sikkuy-aufoq for a shared and equal society, acri, adalah the legal center for arab minority rights in Israel, and others. These bus stops will improve the quality of life for tens of thousands of arab citizens of Israel.
Nif aims to promote freedom of and from - religion in Israel, and to encourage a more tolerant society that embraces the rich diversity of jewish identity and practice. Our grantees advocate for equal allocation of resources to include non-orthodox jewish services and education; strengthen liberal elements within orthodoxy; and combat religious extremism including the exclusion of women from the public sphere. The jerusalem district court ordered the city to hire inspectors to handle widespread incidents of ultra-orthodox jews defacing billboards depicting images of women, in response to a petition submitted by nif grantee Israel religious action center (irac). The court also ordered the municipality and police to devise a plan to combat such vandalism.
Arab/palestinian-israeli society: 20% of Israel's citizens are arabs/palestinians. Nif seeks to promote equality for arab israelis as well as to expand their participation in Israel's democratic processes and institutions.israel's health minister announced a historic investment in health care for arab communities in Israel, thanks in part to advocacy by phri and the shatil-led arab-jewish citizens' forum for the promotion of health in the galilee. The decision allocated an additional $200 million (nis 650 million) to help bridge the gaps in health services between jewish and arab communities.
