Program areas at Native Public Media
The Native Public Media (npm) station support program focuses on enhancing the leadership and operational capacity of Native broadcasting entities across the united states. Currently, npm supports 58 tribal radio stations and three television stations in its network, providing essential services that empower Native communities to manage their broadcasting facilities effectively.key components of the station support program include:1. Training and education: we offer comprehensive training to increase the expertise of tribal broadcasters in critical areas such as fundraising, emergency communications preparedness, and compliance with federal communications commission (fcc) and corporation for Public broadcasting (cpb) regulations. This training is vital for sustaining the operational viability of tribal Media outlets.2. Annual Native broadcast summit: npm hosts a yearly summit that brings together tribal broadcasters to share knowledge, network, and discuss challenges and opportunities within the industry. This event fosters collaboration and innovation among Native Media professionals.3. On-site station operations intervention services: npm provides direct support through on-site interventions, addressing operational challenges faced by tribal stations. These interventions are tailored to the unique needs of each station, ensuring that they can maintain uninterrupted service to their communities.4. Youth engagement through the indigenous youth broadcast and Media workshop: this initiative with northern Arizona university inspires and educates Native youth about broadcasting. This program cultivates the next generation of Media professionals and strengthens community ties through storytelling and cultural expression.
Policy programthe policy program advocates progressive policies that strengthen and expand Media assets serving tribal communities. Our work is rooted in community engagement, ensuring broadcasting remains a democratic and locally driven medium. Key initiatives under the policy program include:1. Assisting tribes in licensing broadcast facilities: we provide guidance and support to tribal governments and entities seeking to navigate the fcc licensing process for securing broadcast facilities. This support is essential for empowering tribes to establish their own Media platforms.2. Supporting tribal communications policies: npm actively engages in Public policy education that promotes partnerships, consultation, fellowships, and infrastructure development for tribal communications and telecommunications. By facilitating community discourse, npm creates a robust framework that supports Native Media operations and the use of broadcast assets that serve tribal communities through an understanding of policymaking and regulatory processes.
