The Policy Center's advocacy efforts have played a significant role in the following:passage of the 2016 fiscal year federal budget which temporarily lifted the harmful sequester budget caps, which, if left in place, would have severely affected funding to critical Housing programs for some of the lowest Income people and families in the u.s. The Policy Center was instrumental in protecting funding to the home investment partnerships program which was threatened with virtual elimination in the 2016 budget deliberations in the senate. (see schedule o for continuation)the Policy Center was instrumental in advocating for the lifting in 2014 of a temporary suspension of fannie mae and freddie mac's statutory obligation to fund the National Housing trust fund. Signed into law by president bush in 2008, the Housing trust fund will now begin to provide dedicated resources - from a very small assessment on fannie mae and freddie mac's book of business - for affordable Housing for extremely Low Income families and individuals beginning in 2016. The Policy Center has also played a strong role in thwarting efforts by some legislators to defund the Housing trust fund, including one proposal in the house of representatives to gut it in order to fund the home program.the introduction of legislation in the last two sessions of congress by representatives in two different bills that contain the basic components of the nlihc-led united for homes campaign. The united for homes campaign proposes modest changes to the mortgage interest deduction to make it fairer, to ensure more moderate-income homeowners can benefit from mortgage tax relief, and to generate revenues for programs to end homelessness and Housing poverty.
