Community mental health education and outreach: nami northern Virginia provides free, evidence-based programs that educate the community, including individuals, family members, caregivers, and professionals about issues related to mental health and co-occurring illnesses. These programs include informational meetings that focus on specific issues and are open to the membership and the general public, as well as educational programs and presentations educating about mental illness, recovery from mental illness, and the available resources to assist in that recovery.
Peer mental health support and education: peer support, for those living with a mental illness, is a basic value of nami northern Virginia. Nami peer-to-peer education classes are provided at no cost and designed to provide information and relapse prevention, while nami connections support groups provide ongoing support to individuals managing their illness. All groups and classes are led by peers with lived experience. Nami northern Virginia also provides a helpline that offers information and referral services to individuals with specific needs and requests.
Family mental health support and education: nami northern Virginia provides no-cost exceptional support to families/loved ones and caregivers of those living with mental health conditions. Courses, such as nami family-to-family, offer information, resources, and coping mechanisms for those who live with a person with a mental illness. Nami family support groups are peer-led and designed to offer ongoing support to family members and caregivers. These programs are led by highly trained volunteers with lived experience.
