Program areas at Music of the Baroque
Under the direction of internationally acclaimed british conductor dame jane glover, Music of the Baroque's professional chorus and orchestra is one of the leading ensembles in the country devoted to the performance of works from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.during the fiscal year, the orchestra resumed full-time live programming including choral and orchestra works by j.s. Bach, handel, vivaldi, mozart and haydn. Lesser-known works are also featured as Music of the Baroque seeks to expand the awareness of and appreciation for works from the renaissance, Baroque and early classical periods. Devoted to expanding its audience and its reach to a wider, more diverse population, Music of the Baroque presented 18 performances of 8 distinct programs to a total audience of over 23,000 people including streaming on demand. the performances take place in two main venues, the 1500-seat harris theater in millennium park chicago and the 850-seat north shore center for the performing arts in suburban skokie, as well as concerts in 4 churches in chicago and the north and western suburbs.community performances expanded our work to increased audiences. Opening the season with "Baroque in the park" in millennium park, an open-air community concert at the pritzker pavilion with over 5000 people attending. This season we also produced the midwest premiere of 'the chevalier," a musical concert theater work featuring the story of 18th-century black composer joseph bologne; it was performed three times: a community performance at the kehrein center for the arts in the austin neighborhood on chicago's west side, at symphony center in downtown chicago, and at the north shore center for the performing arts in north suburban skokie.music of the Baroque also runs a highly regarded choral education program "strong voices" for 1200 chicago high school students in under-resourced schools with free regular voice lessons. Opportunities are provided for public performances with the Music of the Baroque ensemble at our concerts. Music of the Baroque broadcasts regularly on 98.7 wfmt radio, not just across chicago but also across the nation through syndicated stations.as the organization continues to celebrate its 50th anniversary, an ambitious series of concerts, outreach events, recordings and special events will further enhance the organization's impact on audiences across chicago and beyond.
