Aligning programming objectives to u.s. department of health and human services healthy people 2030 and Oregon health authority's healthier together Oregon 2020-2025 goals:1. Healthy behaviors: increase knowledge and behaviors toward nutrition and healthy eating2. Healthy populations: increase numbers of adolescents and time spent in physical activity3. Workforce development: increase exposure to healthcare career pathways(continued on schedule o...)4. Community health: increase advocacy and promotion of equity and justice5. Health literacy: increase basic health knowledge and access to resourcesmike Program provides mentored health Education services in communities most affected by health disparities and adverse health outcomes. Mike Program increased the total number of mentored high school students by 33% during the 2022-2023 academic year, expanding programming at multiple sites and lauching a one new site. Mike Program served 205 students with 45 volunteer near-age mentors and coordinated more than a dozen guest speakers to introduce youth to healthcare career opportunities.mike Program developed programming based on student interest surveys to better respond to the needs of students and their schools. Mike introduced an advocacy and public outreach campaign at our rural Oregon site that generated school and community participation that included local newspaper coverage and presentations at the city hall.additionally, Mike expanded our programming reach to include a health summer camp for foster youth, and other vulnerable individuals. The collaborative effort brought together medical students, staff at the local medical clinic, local emt's and others to host this multi-day camp. The participating youth had an opportunity to learn about many healthcare career opportunities and local resources to pursue those goals. They gained valuable hands-on experience, all at no cost to them. Mike will look to expand on this pilot programs in subsequent years into additional communities across the state.
In an effort to diversify fundraising and revenue streams, Mike undertook an element of our strategic plan to increase funding from earned/ Program revenue. This means Mike getting paid for the work we do. One early example of an accomplishment in this category is a contract that Mike was awarded from ohsu's moore institute of nutrition. This well known institution chose to contract with Mike to update their nutrition in a box Program (niab). Niab is an educational resource ohsu had developed to be used in schools, and which needed to be updated to reflect modern best practices in health educational programming with youth. (continued on schedule o...)since Mike has an expertise in this area, we were selected amongst many organizations to update the language, activities, and nutritional information within this Program. After enacting these changes, niab is now a useful tool that ohsu is using in schools across the state to promote food security and nutrition Education for vulnerable youth.
