Program areas at Move to Amend
General Public Education: Public talks, presentations & writings NOT prepared for a specific audience to educate about the history of democracy and corporations in the United States and solutions to end corporate constitutional rights and get money out of politics. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 1) A Radical Gathering worked with coalition leaders to host a series of presentations, and panels, to teach, learn and practice organizing skills. 2) Developed and hosted three Constitution Day events in DC focused on The Courts, The Corps and Congress. 3) Petition Gathering Campaign - Collected signatures in support for moving to amend the US Constitution and reject the U.S. Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling and other related cases, to firmly establish that money is not speech, and that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights.
Grassroots Movement Support: Training and resources for Move to Amend Affiliate and Advocate leaders and active volunteers. Skills taught include basic organizing, group development, media relationships, event coordination, resolution and initiative campaigns and political organizing. Resources developed and provided include webinar trainings, talking points, fact sheets, and tabling materials. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 1) A Radical Gathering worked with coalition leaders to host a series of presentations and panels, to teach, learn and practice organizing skills. 2) Presented 3 Movement Education and Empowerment Talks (MEETs). 3) Provided affiliate support that included grassroots leadership development and empowerment.
Internships/Fellowships: Apprenticeship opportunities to learn community organizing, organizational skills and leadership skills to increase the number of individuals who have the capacity to educate the public about the history of democracy and corporations in the United States and solutions to end corporate constitutional rights and get money out of politics. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 1) Educated 3 post-secondary students on the ramifications of corporate personhood and money as speech in political campaigns and launched hands-on organizing opportunities.
Outreach & Community Building: Targeted talks, presentations & writings prepared for engagement with allied organizations to educate about the history of democracy and corporations in the United States, the impact that the current state of democracy has on their struggle to achieve their mission, and solutions to end corporate constitutional rights and get money out of politics; as well supporting and acting in solidarity with organizations working on solutions that would be achievable with an end of corporate constitutional rights and money as speech; and connecting with organizations dedicated to creating a diverse, independent, powerful and authentic democracy movement. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 1) Eco-Net strengthened public education, facilitated presentations for how environmental movements can challenge corporate rule, mobilized activists, while prioritizing environmental protection and sustainability. Example: Move to Amend participated at End Fossil Fuels Action in Manhattan, NY. 2) Presented "Abolishing Corporate Rule is Part of the Solution to Authoritarianism and Fascism" at the 22nd Century Conference. 3) Law & Research - Promoted Pro-Democratic/Anti-Corporate Power Statutory Reforms, Webinar for MTA-endorsing lawyers/law firms; Research and development Corporate statutes at the state/federal levels; Constitutional/legal podcasts; SCOTUS Case Analysis; Presentations and participation in conferences (ex American Constitution Society National Convention), and development and creation of academic / professional associations educational development materials. 4) Labor Caucus - Supported our volunteer organizers in their efforts to build relationships with organized labor and securing organized labor support of the We The People Amendment. Promoted and developed labor specific materials and relationship building, engage in constituency- area events and outreach engagement including podcasts and other forms of media outreach. 5) Endorsing Organizations - Continued outreach and coalition building with businesses, unions, faith communities, and local and governmental organizations to secure their endorsement of the We the People Resolution to create real democracy by ending the corrupting effects of undue corporate power through amending the United States Constitution.
Lobbying: Grassroots constituent political organizing and direct legislative activities - including education and training for elected members of Congress and their staffers about the We the People Amendment (currently House Joint Resolution 54) as a solution to the problem of corporate constitutional rights and money in politics. Developing model codes and statutory reforms to be advocated for on the state level. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: To pass HJR54, lobbied, educated, trained, and built relationships with advocates, affiliates, endorsing organizations, as well as congressional staffers and elected Representatives and Senators. 2) Pledge to Amend Campaign - Queried candidates for local, state and federal office to get their positions on record per the We the People Amendment and make this an election issue.
