Program areas at MAHEC

Family medicine: graduated 17 from three-year programs based in one urban and two rural family Health centers. Pharmacy graduated 3 from a two year program in an urban and rural setting. Sports medicine fellows graduated 2. Addiction medicine fellows graduated 2. Established a transitional year residency progam and graduated 8. Services provided in the Health centers resulted in 102,612 patient encounters. Family medicine provided $922,711 in charity care.
Continuing professional devlopment: provided continuing Education for Health & human service professionals in allied Health, dentistry, healthcare leadership, medicine, mental Health, nursing, pharmacy and public Health. Also educated in Health careers & diversity. Regional Education provided 1,285 continuing Education programs to approximately 31,934 participants in western north carolina to professionals in all fields of healthcare.
Obstetrics and gynecology: graduated 4 from four-year program based in our women's Health Center, a high risk maternity and other care clinic serving our 16-county region. Services provided in the Health centers resulted in 54,220 patient encounters and 2,150 deliveries. Included in these volumes are high-risk maternal fetal medical services provided to the 16 counties in western north carolina. Obstetrics and gynecology provided $610,564 in charity care.
General practice residency program in dentistry: graduated 7 from a one-year program.services provided in the dental Health Center resulted in 12,551 patient encounters. Dental Health care provided underinsured care for a total safety net care of $333,642.unc Health sciences at mahec: unc Health sciences at mahec includes the unc school of medicine asheville campus, a master of public Health program led by unc gillings school of global public Health, and innovative educational and research collaborations with unc eshelman school of pharmacy. Unc Health sciences at mahec is supported and informed by mahec's department of research and library science , which focuses on rural healthcare workforce development, academic medicine, clinical research, and practice transformation to improve patient, community, and population Health. All programs under the umbrella of unc Health sciences at mahec encourage learners to train with rural professionals, develop a deep appreciation for rural values, and contribute to improving the quality of life and Health in communities across wnc.gme & rural Health initiative: mahec's rural Health initiative (rhi) is addressing our region's rural healthcare provider shortage through inter-professional Health sciences Education, collaboration with rural communities, and the development of innovative sustainable models of rural healthcare to improve Health across western north carolina. Established a surgical critical care fellowship and graduated 1 surgical critical care fellow and 4 general surgeons.psychiatry: graduated 3 from the 4 year psychiatry residency program. Established a consulation-liaison psychiatry fellowship progam and graduated 1 fellow. Services provided in the Health centers resulted in 28,597 patient encounters. Psychiatry provided $237,464 in charity care.internal medicine: continued building the 3 year internal medicine residency program with commmunity partners. Services provided in the Health centers resulted in 7,815 patient encounters. Internal medicine provided $108,967 in charity care.
