Program areas at Mississippi Poultry Association
Annual convention: mississippu Poultry Association's (mpa) 2022 convention had its largest number of attendees and its second largest amount of income in recent history. This is the Association's major fundraiser of the year.
Charitable donation. Each year before thanksgiving, mpa coordinates an annual donation from member companies of Poultry and egg products to a charity designated by the governor. The 2022 donation was the 12th year. This was our largest donation of food pantries and soup kitchens given through extra table charity.advocacy. The Association represents the industry before the legislature and provides comments on proposed local, state, and federal regulations and federal legislation that impact the industry. Mpa's president serves on the boards of the legislatively-created emergency road and bridge repair fund advisory board, as well as the boards of the business and industry political education committee and the agricultural and forestry museum foundation board.
Educational and promotional activities: : the list includes the Poultry health seminar geared to company veterinarians in february, the two-day Poultry management school in may for Poultry company service technicians, and the august seminar for industry employees working in hatcheries or supervising breeder farms. We added a class in june led by united state department of agriculture food safety and inspection service officials for processing plant personnel. University professors and industry professionals volunteered as speakers at the events. Mpa kept its members informed through a weekly legislative newsletter emailed weekly to about 400 individuals (an increase in number from prior years) while the legislators are in session and until the governor signs all bills. The quarterly magazine geared to growers' interests is mailed to more than 900 individuals. The website and social media are the two other avenues the Association uses to inform members.we were only able to have two grower advisory committee meetings in 2022, because of outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza. The committee normally meets quarterly.
