Program areas at Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge Trust
In keeping with its strategic framework 2019 2023, the Minnesota Valley Trust (mvt) had the following program accomplishments in 2022:1. Mvt invested in strategic land acquisition for the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge complex. Mvt continued working with landowners on acquisition of parcels to expand and complete Refuge units. It signed a purchase agreement for an acquisition to be completed in early 2023 but did not finalize any acquisitions in 2022. Mvt conveyed by donation three parcels of land totaling 72 acres to the usfws in late 2022. 2. Mvt invested in strategic habitat restoration and enhancement on the Refuge complex. In 2022, mvt: employed a full-time habitat biologist to design, plan and manage habitat restoration and enhancement on mvt lands, coordinate the conservation corps mn-ia (ccmi) crew, and assist with Refuge projects. Contracted for and coordinated a ccmi crew that conducted habitat enhancement activities over 406 acres (10 sites) and participated in usfws prescribed burns over 1,451 acres (7 sites). Contracted for habitat restoration and enhancement work over another 196 acres at 4 parcels recently acquired by mvt and 189 acres owned by the usfws. Work included a stormwater management project on a recently-acquired parcel in carver county to solve significant ravine erosion issues. Working with the Refuge, developed plans and requests for proposals for habitat restoration and enhancement work to be completed in upcoming seasons on over 900 acres at 12 sites. 3. Mvt supported special projects and investments to provide a positive, inspiring experience on the Refuge for a diversity of visitors. In 2022, mvt: funded the operations of the rapids lake education and visitor center (evc) and intern bunkhouse. Provided public wi-fi at the bloomington evc. Funded one Refuge maintenance position. Employed a gis specialist & special projects manager to develop and maintain a geodatabase and trail maintenance dashboard for the Refuge, produce high-quality Refuge maps for visitor and staff use, coordinate all work related to conveying lands to the usfws and manage it for the Refuge. 4. The Minnesota Valley Trust invested in connecting more people and a diversity of people with the Refuge. In 2022, mvt: provided financial support to the Minnesota Valley Refuge friends for its position of executive director and support to the friends regarding finances, fundraising, membership and community relations. Funded three park ranger positions in visitor services on the Refuge. Expanded its internship and apprenticeship initiative with the Refuge - "mentoring the next generation of conservation professionals" - after being awarded a $500,000 grant in 2021 from Minnesota's environment & natural resources Trust fund. Employed four environmental education teaching interns in full-time one-year positions to develop and deliver content to students, families and visitors on the Refuge, at partner schools and in the community. Employed four apprentices in full-time two-year positions to serve on the Refuge teams in conservation biology, community outreach and visitor services. Employed a full-time internship coordinator to assist with recruitment and ensure all interns and apprentices on the Refuge have a high-quality experience, as well as to lead the Refuge's expanded high school internship program. 5. Mvt leveraged its assets. In 2022, mvt: received $612,357 in grant payments on a reimbursement basis from the state of Minnesota, us department of interior and others for program activities completed as per grant agreements. Was awarded a grant by the 2022 Minnesota legislature in the amount of $1,100,000, as recommended by the lessard-sams outdoor heritage council for metro big rivers phase 12. The grant will be paid on a reimbursement basis for strategic land acquisition to expand the Refuge.
