Program areas at Minnesota Indian Womens Sexual Assault Coalition

Education and training - provided education and training in Minnesota and nationally to increase awareness of Sexual violence and sex trafficking of american Indian women and Alaska native women and children and to enhance, strengthen tribal, state and federal responses to such violence. We held one statewide conference on the mille lacs reservation where approximately 140 people were educated on violence against native women. In addition, we conducted approximately 25 workshops and presentations to over 700 people, at various state and national venues. The topics included: prostitution/trafficking of native women; Sexual violence against native women; tribal strategies to address Sexual violence; mental health; two spirits/lgbtq issues; confidentiality; and advocacy standards of service. We held a national sex trafficking in Indian country conference in palm springs, California, to more than 300 people. We traveled to tribal and non-tribal communities around the country. Membership and outreach - our membership includes 38 program memberships and 106 individual members, we provided quarterly membership meetings at the following locations: lower sioux community of morton, grand portage, and shakopee. We had a visioning meeting with our membership in nisswa mn. We also provided ongoing technical assistance and outreach to our members through our listserv, email, telephone and social media outlets. We collaborated with the native Womens society of the great plains to provide a advocates wellness camp/included the making of both the red shawl project and the red skirt project, this was well attended with over 40 participants (october 2018).

Public awareness - we collaborated with the mn Indian Womens resource center and five local native american artists who shared their talent, resources, time and energy and food to work the night before our murdered & missing Indian Womens march. It was well attended with the community working together to create banners, signs which brought public awareness to the names of native women who are still missing and those who were murdered. The next day we co-sponsored a march for murdered and missing indigenous women, where we brought our solidarity shawls to raise awareness. There were over 1,200 people in attendance. Additionally, we brought our solidarity shawls to several events and pow wows to raise awareness of violence against native women and girls.
