Program areas at Medworks
According to the center for community solutions, more than 60,000 people in the city of cleveland are without health insurance, and for those who are insured, many plans do not include dental and vision insurance. Meworks provides free dental and vision services to adults and children across northeast Ohio who are uninsured or underinsured. This includes dental cleanings, fillings, extractions, flippers, and sealants, and vision exams and prescription eyeglasses. Each year, Medworks hosts a large-scale dental clinic, at the huntington convention center, serving nearly 1,000 patients over two days. In addition to dental services, at the 2019 dental clinic, Medworks began offering vision services using four (4) mobile lanes. Medworks is paying for this lease-to-own mobile vision equipment over a three-year timeframe and will use the equipment at future clinics. At the 2019 dental & vision clinic, in collaboration with prevent blindness Ohio, Medworks provided 105 vision screenings, 52 full vision exams, and 41 prescription eyeglasses. Medworks plans to hold an annual dental & vision clinic, as well as integrate these services into traditional clinics (below).
Medworks navigation services (formerly the chap program, integrated into Medworks in 2018) are a vital part of the Medworks 'care + connect' model. Medworks not only provides a day of 'care,' via its mobile clinics, but Medworks also has a navigation team that 'connects' people with health insurance, medical homes, follow-up medical appointments, and other needed social services, such as food, housing, and mental health services. Medworks navigation team provides these services daily at the cuyahoga county justice center, enrolling incarcerated individuals in health insurance just prior to release. Medworks navigation services are also provided at lorain family planning services, Medworks traditional clinics, Medworks dental & vision clinic, Medworks outreach clinics (described below), and in-between clinics via a helpline. In 2019, Medworks assisted 2,300+ individuals with health insurance information and enrolled 1,948 in health insurance. Given the fact that people living at or near poverty may struggle with transportation, in 2019, Medworks launched outreach clinics, bringing Medworks navigation services, and sometimes medical screenings as well, to places that are frequently visited by people in need. Medworks held outreach clinics at edwins, harbor light, salvation army, towards employment, and university settlement. In 2019, 222 people were served via 21 outreach clinics, with 179 enrolled in health insurance. Medworks will continue to offer these vital navigational services and outreach clinics going forward.
Medworks provides free medical, dental, and vision services through the year at various traditional clinics, which are held in collaboration with federally qualified health centers (fqhcs) and medical centers. In 2019, outside of the dental & vision clinic, Medworks held three traditional clinics-the homeless stand down, care alliance, and neighborhood family practice clinics. Nearly 300 patients attended these traditional clinics, with services spanning medical exams, women's health exams, mammograms, podiatry exams, dental services, flu shots, and more. More than 1,000 individual medical services were provided through Medworks traditional clinics in 2019. Due to staffing changes, Medworks cancelled two traditional clinics in 2019, but Medworks plans to hold five (5) to seven (7) traditional clinics a year, serving 750+ patients via traditional clinics, in future years.
