Originally chartered in 1949 as a charitable not-for-profit organization, the medical foundation of north carolina, inc. (aka unc medicine), fosters private gift support of programs throughout the school of medicine and unc hospitals. Unc medicine is the fundraising engine that powers philanthropic investment for the university of north carolina's top-notch medical education programs, clinical and scientific research initiatives, and patient care infrastructure. Unc medicine raises critical funding to train the next generation of expert caregivers, move world-renowned research from the bench to the bedside, and provide the best possible care to people in every county in north carolina and every corner of the world. In the past fiscal year, the foundation received nearly 25,000 gifts from over 15,000 donors, closing out a record-breaking year. Cultivation and stewardship programs across unc medicine include recognition societies, donor walls, annual reports and endowment impact packets. The development staff personally engaged with donors through phone calls and visits, also cultivating relationships through outreach programs and events, both on and off campus. The medical foundation manages over 1,800 funds, comprised of endowed, restricted and unrestricted accounts. These funds support the existing and emerging needs of all aspects medicine touches, from molecular research, to patient and family support, to scholarships. The physicians, scientists, and researchers at unc constantly strive to discover better ways to care for patients through preventing and treating disease. The funds raised by unc medicine are essential to the continued success and projected need for better access to care, better treatments and better outcomes.
