Program areas at Marquette Neighborhood Association
Annual support of the community-building mission of the Wil-Mar Neighborhood center, which offers services to families and individual neighbors, including child care, meeting spaces, fitness and well-being classes for all ages, food pantries and community meals, and senior citizen activities. In FY 2018-2019, MNA also contributed to Wil-Mar's capital campaign for building improvements that benefit all community center participants.
The Marquette Waterfront Festival and Orton Park Festivals are the most visible and well attended activities of MNA. These music and art festivals span 6 days over 2 weekends and draw thousands of people from the neighborhood and well beyond. The festivals are the primary fundraiser for MNA and proceeds allow it to support a wide variety of programs and initiatives in the community. These free annual cultural events highlight the dynamic nature of the Marquette Neighborhood, build a true feeling of community and showcase the activities of MNA. They are part of the fabric of the neighborhood and provide diverse family friendly entertainment. The festivals are planned, produced and carried out exclusively by neighborhood volunteers.
MNA contributes both time and resources to supporting youth programs in the neighborhood. These activities include supporting the Eastside Express, a summertime daycare managed by WilMar, a youth development program supported by the Common Wealth Development as well as a scholarship program for high school seniors looking at advanced education. Additionally, MNA directly supports the schools in the neighborhood by providing funding for teacher needs, supporting an on the water program as part of Physical Education and most recently funding a program to provide temporary housing to students and their families in need of these services. MNA was also a proud contributor to the capital campaign for the renovation of the East High School Fieldhouse.
