Program areas at Lynchburg Area Veterans Council
As reported previously, the Lynchburg Area Veterans Council Inc purchased the residential property located at 1309 garfield avenue city of Lynchburg; the birthplace and childhood home of desmond t. doss, wwii medal of honor recipient whose story was made famous in the hollywood movie, "hacksaw ridge." We dedicated this home on october 19th, 2019 as the "desmond t. doss Veterans home." A total of eight previously homeless Veterans have lived there since then. The expenses listed above 12,426.91 represent real estate taxes, insurance, and utilities of this 116 year old farm house. We are unable to put a price on the value of providing quality shelter for eight Veterans who were living on the streets in central Virginia.
Lavc provides temporary shelter (motel rooms) for homeless Veterans in the Lynchburg Area, until they can be entered into the program operated by the central Virginia continuum of care, of which lavc is a voluntary contributing member. Lavc considers this both a program vital to what we do and an expense of the program.
Lavc helps needy Veterans in our Area with financial assistance. The grant figure above represents help to individuals and non-profit veteran groups. Each assistance request is verified by lavc volunteers as a valid need. Funds are paid directly to creditors of the Veterans such as landlords, utility companies, auto repair, auto loan payments, gift cards for food, etc. There were no specific expenses associated with this program other than our routine expenses of operation in general. The other veteran groups are as follows; american legion post 16, vietnam Veterans of america chapter 196, military order of the purple heart chapter 1607, and others.
