Program areas at Joy Southfield CDC
COMMUNITY HEALTH2056 residents engaged in Joy Southfield CDC programming to improved health through exercise, diabetes support, healthy eating, fresh food access and clinical support. Joy Southfield programs include the Sowing Seeds Farmers market, HEAL diabetes support group, Cooking for a Change, LYFFE (Leading Youth thru Food & Financial Education) and Healthy Homes RX.5248 clients received free health care or health services at a reduced rate through our Covenant Community Care partnership. 75 food insecure families received $3,000 worth free food through our Co Act Covid Relief grant. 11 families received $82,600 worth of home repairs and improvements through the Healthy Homes Program and our partnership with Level One bank and MSHDA.Volunteer numbers were affected by the Covid 19 pandemic, but 152 volunteers supported Joy Southfield with approximately 2280 volunteer hours. Accessible fresh food and vegetables is the core goal of the farmers market. In 2021, non-produce vendors participated, giving independent entrepreneurs exposure during a tough economic year. Covid 19 vaccines were offered by Covenant Care during select farmers market days.Due to COVID-19, the cooking for a change program was held virtually. Local well-known chefs Phil Jones and Debra Winfrey provided cooking demonstration videos for virtual online classes. Class participants reviewed the videos on the JSCDC YouTube channel. Great Grocer Fellowship ProgramPartnered with local grocer, Americana Foods located on Plymouth Road to Improved store relationships with neighbors; and increase the capacity of stores to stock and sell healthy food. oJSCDC fellow worked on the healthy shop model and facilitated a community survey to customers - to adjust their products and services to meet the needs of the residents of the neighborhood and respond to customer feedback oAmerican Foods Grocer and the JSCDC fellow partnered together to host a healthy food event, Harvest Day held on November 3. The event consisted of showcasing healthy recipes, vendors and family entertainment, Smiley the clown. oDetroit Food Policy and the JSCDC fellow assisted Americana Foods on purchasing equipment and signage to highlight healthy foods in the store
