Limon Dance company: the Limon Dance company was founded in 1946 by choreographer and modern Dance pioneer Jose Limon. Named one of america's irreplaceable Dance treasures by the Dance heritage coalition, Limon was instrumental in shaping the creation of american modern Dance and the art of choreography as we know it today. Over the years, the company has produced a balance of classic works of american modern Dance with new commissions from contemporary choreographers that has yielded a repertory of unparalleled breadth. To date, the legacy company is led by artistic director dante puleio and has produced and presented 74 classic works and more than 70 contemporary commissions throughout the u.s. and abroad. In 2008, as a testament to the organization's longevity and contributions to the field, the Foundation was awarded the national medal of arts for lifetime achievement by the white house.
Limon school: the Limon institute, founded in 1985, is an educational and archival resource center for the new york city Dance community and beyond. The institute offers daily Limon technique training classes and workshops, and chronicles Limon's devotion to modern Dance through active documentation and educational programs. Central to these programs is limon4kids, a free arts education program for underserved youth in new york city public schools that utilizes Dance and theater as a tool for social action. Through the institute, the company continues to celebrate and advocate for cultural diversity, provide access to affordable artistic and leadership training, and cultivate new artists and Dance audience members.
