Program areas at Working Together Jackson
In april of 2023, Jackson suffered a public health crisis as trash piled up in the streets due to the city's failure to reach an agreement about who would collect said trash. In a non-partisan campaign, Working Together Jackson (wtj) mobilized the community to urge the city council to permit the company that fairly won the blind bid rfp process to pick up the trash. Due involvement of the court and community pressure, the emergency was resolved and trash pick-up resumed. During the spring 2023 legislative session, wtj worked with its sister organization, Working Together Mississippi, to help pass the extension of medicaid coverage to new mothers from 60 days to a year. Also, during the 2023 general election, wtj contacted more than 20,000 infrequent voters to increase voter turnout in hinds county. This was a nonpartisan effort.
