Iowa City Free Medical Clinic

The Iowa City Free Medical Clinic has served the diverse, low-income population of Iowa City, johnson county, and the surrounding area since 1971. By offering Free healthcare, the Clinic provides an affordable alternative to emergency rooms and ensures patients can prioritize basic needs like housing, food, and utilities. While care is provided at no cost, it relies on volunteers and limited resources. The Clinic is supported by local funding agreements, grants, fundraising, donor contributions, and donated services. In fiscal year 24, the Clinic held 7-8 Medical clinics and 2-3 dental clinics weekly. Patients received treatment for acute and chronic diseases, specialty care, and preventive care. A small staff and over 400 annual volunteers provided the comprehensive care to hundreds of people monthly. During the year, the Clinic provided 6,715 appointments, addressing and treating 14,720 diagnoses. Patients received Medical care, laboratory work, and prescription medication as needed. 95% of patients were uninsured, 56% were employed, and 70% had household incomes below the federal poverty level. Without the Clinic, many vulnerable individuals would likely avoid seeking care due to high out-of-pocket costs associated with emergency rooms or private practices.
