Program areas at Institute for Public Strategies
Alcohol and Drug Prevention:IPS provides community-based, population-focused, environmental prevention services related to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs (ATOD) in three counties and more than a dozen cities across Southern California. This is accomplished through community organizing, media advocacy, Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, policy development, and sustainability planning. The goal is to create lasting social, cultural, physical, legal and/or political changes in communities that will prevent and reduce ATOD problems.
Behavior Health Disparities:IPS advances health equity in communities to prevent behavioral health disparities, including underage drinking, and addiction and death related to opioid and meth use. The underlying premise is that inequitable community conditions lead to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), toxic stress, and community trauma that result in alcohol and drug addiction and death. Therefore, the program focuses on making community conditions more equitable so everyone in the community can thrive.
Preventing Exposure to Second-Hand Smoke:Through community-driven policy change at institutional and municipal levels, IPS strives to eliminate exposure to second-hand smoke in multi-unit housing complexes.
