Program areas at Institute for Defense and Business

Strategic broadening seminars:idb's strategic broadening seminars, created originally at the request of the u.s. army, are a collection of educational programs designed to expose company-grade officers, warrant officers, and senior non-commissioned officers to strategic areas of study to expand their perspective while honing their leadership skills. These programs push participants to think differently, gain exposure to non-u.s. military perspectives, and be prepared to operate in an uncertain future. Industry based broadening (ib2) strategic broadening seminars are training with industry programs in the sbs portfolio offered by idb. These programs help transfer Business examples into the military through numerous targeted visits with industry supplemented by academic sessions and group work. The industry based broadening-logistics (ib2log) program ran twice in 2022 with 59 total participants. Industry based broadening-information environment (ib2ie) was offered once to 12 participants.the idb dense urban studies strategic broadening seminar is an intensive educational and experiential learning opportunity for u.s. army students to explore and understand the critical infrastructure and urban geography of cities, the technological and physical connectedness of city networks, and the culture and behavior of people and their environment in dense urban areas. In 2022, the program was delivered twice with spring and fall cohorts totaling 60 participants. Each dense urban studies program cohort explored new york city for two weeks and was based in fort hamilton, new york.
Logistics for the 21st century (log21):logistics for the 21st century (log21) is designed to provide early-career, high-potential logisticians with a comprehensive and tailored educational experience aimed at furthering their professional development while giving them a glimpse into the potential rewards and promise of a long-term career in logistics and sustainment. Returning to the classroom after all-online delivery in 2021, 2022 saw continued strong demand for log21 with five offerings totaling 98 participants.by targeting the previously underserved early-career demographic, log21 has established itself as a key component of the idb's logistics and technology education portfolio. Program evaluations are very high; students finish the course with a better understanding of how they can tap into their cross-service, cross-agency, and intra-industry professional network to be more resilient in the face of change and develop more robust solutions to existing and future challenges.
Center of excellence in logistics and technology executive education (logtech):logtech was initiated in 2000 and is the flagship program of the idb. Logtech activities include two complementary week-long executive education programs. The two logtech executive education programs are clearly distinct in their curriculum, levels of instruction, discussion, and application. Experienced logistics leaders who set strategic direction and vision for their organizations and must deal with complex logistics and organizational transformation are ideally suited for the executive-level program. Logisticians with recognized potential for greater responsibilities and who are charged with implementing executive direction will benefit significantly from the advanced-level course. The idb logtech program periodically reviews and adjusts the curricula to incorporate the considerations of the national Defense strategy, the individual service strategies, current industry best practices, and breakthrough technologies to continuously provide relevance and alignment. In february 2022, idb convened representatives from industry, each service's logistics organization, the office of the assistant secretary of defense-sustainment, and the joint staff logistics directorate to review and develop recommendations for refining the logtech curricula to ensure that course material is relevant, stimulates creative thought, and advances the development of leaders from Defense and industry.there were five logtech executive education programs in 2022: four offerings of the advanced program in logistics and technology and one program for executives in logistics and technology to a total of 141 participants.
Aviation industrial readiness program (air-p):inspired by the success of its depot and arsenal executive leadership program (daelp), and in response to needs identified by the u.s. navy, idb developed the aviation industrial readiness program (air-p) and it launched in 2018. This program was developed in partnership with the u.s. navy fleet readiness center east and faculty from north carolina state university. The curriculum provides leaders from aviation-focused Defense organic industrial base facilities with leadership development and Business acumen tools through academic, benchmarking, and corporate residencies.air-p cohort 3, which began with academics in october 2021, completed corporate residencies through the spring 2022, and a final academic residency and graduation in june 2022. In october 2022, air-p cohort 4 was fielded with 37 participants from the u.s. navy, air force, and army. Academic and benchmarking residencies were accomplished through the end of 2022. Corporate residencies will take place in the winter and spring of 2023 and the cohort will have its final academic residency and graduation in june.
Air force continuous process improvement for executives program:since 2016, idb has delivered custom-designed continuous process improvement (cpi) courses for air force senior leaders charged with implementing cpi in their commands/organizations. These two-day programs are delivered across the united states in locations including Colorado springs, co; dayton, oh; chapel hill, nc; san antonio, tx; and Washington, dc. Idb delivered two in-residence offerings of the "cpi for executives" program in 2022 to 48 participants in north carolina.also in 2022, idb developed and delivered a modified cpi for executives program in february tailored to the challenges facing the personnel of the air force civil engineering center (afcec) in san antonio Texas. Continuing its support of afcec, idb facilitated consultation by subject matter experts throughout 2022.
Life cycle executive leadership program:developed in response to industry requests and military requirements for educational programs focused on life cycle management and the total cost of ownership for products and systems, the life cycle executive leadership program (lcelp) focuses on the Business aspects of life cycle design and support decisions and is for managers in both the technical and Business sides of acquiring and sustaining systems. Idb delivered lcelp twice in 2022 (april and august) to 37 participants.
Idb executive fellows program:the idb executive fellows program provides recently retired senior leaders from the military services an opportunity to share their knowledge and experience with established and promising new leaders in the dod, the military services and the private sector. New in 2022, to better reflect the idb mission and participant base, an executive fellow from private industry was included in the 2022 class. All future classes will include a fellow from the private sector as well. During 2022, the fellows participated in, and made presentations at idb programmatic offerings including logtech, sbs, lcelp, air force cpi for executives, and log21. Idb fellows provided their insight on emerging military- and education-related issues and trends.
