Program areas at Ica SF
The role of an Ica is to show the work of artists working at the most innovative, incisive, and experimental levels of artistic production. As a non-collecting museum space, Ica SF encourages artists to experiment and expand their practices by providing them with time, funds, support and space to actualize their work. We are uniquely positioned to offer artists an opportunity to push the boundaries of their practice and recognize that what we add to the Art world ecosystem-and that of the bay area-is a space that allows artists to make work they might otherwise not have the chance to explore and produce. We partner with artists to allow them time to imagine what might be next in their practice. What have they been holding in the back of their mind that they haven't been given the physical space or the creative space to push towards? We are often the first place to offer artists their first ever museum exhibition or largest museum exhibition to date.as such, Ica SF has produced over ten nationally and globally recognized exhibitions featuring artists traditionally underrepresented in american museums (bipoc artists, female identifying artists, etc. ), including: jeffrey gibson: subsequently selected as first indigenous artist to resting our eyes: featuring twenty multi-generational black artists addressing leisure as liberationliz hernndez & ryan whelan: an exhibition celebrating the resilience of bay area creativessolo exhibitions by: rupy c. tut (b. 1985, chandigarh, india); patrick martinez(b. 1980, los angeles, ca); hayv kahraman (b. 1981, baghdad, iraq); saif azzuz (b. 1987, eureka, ca); suchitra mattai (b. 1973, georgetown, guyana); maryam yousif (b. 1985, baghdad, iraq)public + educational programmingwhile bringing curatorial and cultural rigor through our exhibitions, Ica SF has also offered ongoing free meaningful community programming to the public: meantime: through this series of pop-ups, workshops, performances, and artist residencies happening "in the meantime" between Ica SF's major exhibitions, we have provided funding and opportunities to over 120 bay area artists, creatives, and collectives based in the bay area-regardless of exhibition history, gallery representation, or institutional affiliation.
