Program areas at Hygiene4All

* hygiene & sanitation: at the hub we provide attended showers & bathrooms. We offer one of the only attended dumpsters where unsheltered neighbors can reliably and legally dispose of household trash. During 2022 there were 3,503 visitors to the hub. Starting in march 2023 we will offer a first of its kind clothing and bedding exchange, allowing patrons to exchange dirty for clean items, and diverting textile waste from the streets and waste stream. Church partners collect & launder dirty items off site, returning them to a "free store" for further use. This reduces laundry service costs.continue on schedule o.it encourages patrons to divert usable items from the waste stream by eliminating the lines, distance, wait, and stress associated with limited self-laundering options and rewarding drop off over discard with clean clothes. The exchange halts lice and bed bug infection by offering a way to replace all textile related possessions, while treating and washing their bodies simultaneously.hygiene4all (h4a) established a new partnership with bonfolk for sock donations and worked with joint office of homeless services (johs) to get monthly supplies of tarps, tents, sleeping bags, medical and hygiene supplies. Right gift partnership- procuring in-kind donations of clothing and bedding. Supply drive- raised 1000 for tents/in kind donations of sleeping bags, tarps, tents, clothing, hygiene products, hand warmers, soap. 500 gallons of soap from orange soap company. * peer to peer training problem solving, mutual aid, & self advocacy: h4a centers the self-determination, knowledge, and ingenuity of historically excluded and targeted communities. We pay unsheltered staff to collaboratively develop and provide culturally specific protocols and care to their peers. Such collaboration enhances mental wellbeing, community connectedness, understanding, and helps us identify the unmet needs of our diverse communities to address them at their root cause. H4a's data and outreach work builds staff and volunteer information resources and skills to enhance their capacities to advocate for evidence-based, equity-oriented improvements in public hygiene, sanitation, safety, and health infrastructure. Our data team engages area businesses, housed neighbors, and policymakers to share our research and allows our unsheltered team to robustly engage portland's civic life. * low barrier access to basic health & wellbeing: we offer basic first aid & self-care packets focused on foot and wound care (beginning in mid-summer 2021) h4a ambassadors also help patrons connect with hard to navigate physical and mental health resources. Offering friendly peer-based aid in navigating byzantine systems of public mental health, housing, and resource support reduces the intimidation and fear that frequently prevent patrons from getting the help they desire. During 2022 Hygiene4all worked with hep c-cascade aids project partnership, the equi institute- community health worker partnership and the flying dogheart farm.
Our culture and approach - we create a culture of well-being and harm reduction by training staff and volunteers in (1) how to recognize and disrupt common forms of racist, sexist, anti-queer, and ableist harm our most vulnerable houseless communities experience; (2) taking accountability for harm when it occurs, (3) trauma informed safety planning, escalation mitigation, planning, and de-escalation strategies, (4) mental health first aid (5) opiod overdose response, (6) communicating in community (7) sociocratic-based work circles & decision making.more than just services, h4a is a space of sanctuary, safety, and innovation. We create sanctuary by modeling a culture of respect, dignity, and kindness centered on relationship building, understanding, and repair. We foment innovation by drawing disparate communities of knowledge together to problem-solve in ways that unsettle "groupthink," spark new insights, and generate the collaborative, creative-wellspring from which novelty emerges.
