Program areas at The Humane Society of Oldham County

Low cost spay/neuter surgery is provided weekly for animal owners who cannot otherwise afford this service and to other rescue groups who rely on this service to continue their work. In 2022 we had our second highest year for a total of 1,771 surgeries for a total of 25,382 surgeries since The beginning of The program in 2005.
Our flagship programs are camp k9 and 4 paws 4 service prison dog training programs. Under The camp k9 program, inmate handlers train The dogs in manners and basic obedience commands before The dogs are put up for adoption. This benefits The inmate in providing him with skills and discipline that can be used after release or while incarcerated, The dog benefits by becoming more attractive for adoption, and The future adopter benefits by having a well behaved member of The family. Dogs identified as having service dog potential for veterans, first responders, and 5 star families received higher level training in The commands necessary to benefit these potential adopters, such as pulling wheel chairs, alerting to medical issues, picking up dropped items, etc. Through 2022, 17 service dogs and 5 therapy dogs have been trained through these programs.
We rehome unwanted and homeless animals by finding them permanent loving homes. Animals are rescued from unnecessary euthanasia from local shelters, and from owner surrenders eliminating The need to turn The animal in to The local shelter. In both cases a tax benefit is realized by those communities when The holding overhead costs are reduced in The local shelter. Even under covid constraints, we rescued 386 animals by finding them permanent loving homes. Since The inception of The program in 2008, 3,317 animals have been rescued.
