Program areas at Hips
Hips social services offers quality case management, peer counseling, support groups to marginalized people who engage in sex work or drug use on the streets of dc. We operate out of our harm reduction drop-in center and through a pop up at the downtown day services center. In 2022, we offered clothing, food, housing navigation, re-entry support for lgbtq individuals returning from incarceration, referrals and more to over 2,400 clients.
Hips mobile services department brings Hips programs to the streets through extensive outreach 24 hours a day, 6 days a week through our mobile outreach van. In 2022 the program conducted over 700 hours of overnight (11pm - 5am) outreach, exchanged 370,000 syringes, and saw a 23% increase in distribution of overdose prevention kits (naloxone).
Hips clinical services department works to bring quality medical care and support to those for whom it is often out of reach. The program provides testing and treatment for hiv, hcv, sti's and other infectious diseases. In 2022 Hips helped ensure equitable distribution of covid-19 and mpox vaccinations to unhoused people most at risk for infection, and provides a low barrier innovative medication assisted treatment program for unhoused individuals struggling with opioid use disorder to 129 patients.
Hips advocacy program works to bring the voices of those most impacted by laws and policies to the forefront of conversations on today's most pressing issues. In 2022 we engaged in storytelling projects, testimony and educational campaign on issues such as criminalization, violence against sex workers and the importance of harm reduction in the overdose crisis.
