Hba of Durham Orange and Chatham Counties Foundation

We provided 8 - $1000 scholarships to area high school students pursuing a post-secondary education in the residential construction trade. We continued as part of a consortium that created the summer careers academy. Summer careers academy is an eight-week trades training pre-apprenticeship program which provides instruction on construction trades jobs, such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, and hvac and serves local youth, putting focus on recruiting students who have traditionally faced barriers to accessing successful career pathways, including refugees, low-income students, and students of color. We assisted in grant writing and the consortium received a grant from the nc workforce innovation and opportunity act (those funds went directly to the chapel hill-carrboro city school system) while the Hba received a grant for $150,000 from the kenan charitable trust.
