Program areas at Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley
Restore - the restore is a retail store operated by hhhv. The store accepts donations from individuals and businesses of new and gently used building materials, tools, furniture and appliances. These items are sold to the public at 50-75% off retail price. The restore profit is invested back into the hhhv programs. The restore provides our community with high quality materials and products at reasonable prices to improve and furnish existing homes. The restore recycles materials, reduces resources consumed, and diverts many tons of material from landfills each year.
Home construction: home improvement program (hip) - the home improvement program furthers hhhv's mission of supporting affordable home ownership. The program includes all hhhv projects for families who do not receive a new mortgage. Hip includes roof replacements, weatherization projects, critical repair projects, exterior improvements, refrigerator replacements, air conditioning installation, as well as furnace testing and replacement. There are a large number of homes that are in need of roof replacement in the community - where the cost of replacement is beyond the reach of many families. Without a new roof these families' homes will continue to deteriorate and would eventually become unlivable. In addition, homes that are insufficiently insulated or have outdated heating equipment are often a financial burden to their homeowners and can potentially be unsafe. Hhhv's hip aims to alleviate this pressure on low-income residents by making home more energy efficient. Through these energy efficiency upgrades, hhhv can help families save on their monthly utility bills as well as reduce their impact on the environment to create a more sustainable community. Since 2013 the hhhv hip has served 1455 families county-wide with substantial projects including veteran repairs, weatherization work, insulation, and/or furnace replacements. During the same period, hhhv has also worked with an additional 8,623 families with smaller projects including furnace tune-ups new refrigerators, and exterior home improvements. In fy2024 hhhv has served 123 families with 261 projects and assisted an additional 661 families with projects. These projects helped many families save an average of 500 per year in utility cost.
Home construction: home ownership program (hop)- hhhv partners with families to build a new life for themselves through decent, affordable homeownership. We renovate existing underutilized houses with community partners and sponsors. This hhhv program helps turn these houses into homes and assist the partner family in obtaining an affordable mortgage. Newly renovated, energy-efficient Habitat homes are sold to individuals and families who qualify and are approved for the program. Those who partner with Habitat are community-minded residents who are looking for the stability of homeownership. Hhhv also works closely with these families by offering classes that will prepare them to be successful homeowners. Ultimately, we build much more than houses - the impact of homeownership is profound and lasting. Hhhv has provided over 270 homes to new owners under this program.
Community development - our community development activities include events in which hhhv helps create a benefit for an entire neighborhood. Activities include neighborhood association meetings, community planning meetings, door-to-door surveys, supporting resident-led action teams, neighborhood beautification days, neighborhood picnics, enhancing community amenities, and neighborhood school events. In particular, hhhv is currently partnering with residents in gault village, west willow, and sugarbrook to make their communities even better places to live and work. While we have renovated more than 60 homes in these neighborhoods, we also provide support for community planning and organization work to enhance the positive impact of all of our programs. We offer these programs and activities in order to bring positive change to neighborhoods, making them more economically stable and improving the quality of life for residents. Volunteer engagement - in fy24 hhhv engaged with 3013 volunteers for 14,843 hours across all programs and committees. Hhhv utilizes a donor database to track these volunteers, and this number represents the total number of volunteer days multiplied by the volunteers which are present for each volunteer day. In this method a single volunteer will be counted for each event or day in which they were present. Transparency - hhhv is committed to efficiency and transparency. We communicate with our supporters, donors and prospective donors by email, social media, postal mail, phone, and other means, both to request contributions to our cause and to educate the public about hhhv's year- round programs, volunteer opportunities and other events in our local communities, and around the world. These efforts help advance our mission by bringing people together to build homes, secure futures and strengthen communities. As a result, in accordance with financial accounting standards board (fasb) guidelines and internal revenue service guidance, hhhv allocates a portion of our fundraising costs to program services. As a nonprofit organization that is exempt from federal taxation, we ensure our donor's money is spent as efficiently and effectively as possible. Additionally, we have certain expenses that cannot be billed separately for each functional area. Rent, utilities, information technology and other costs are grouped together. We allocate these costs in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, or gaap, across our programs (including restore), management and general, and fundraising categories. Finally, staff members have responsibilites that cross over functional areas, and these staff members' time is allocated across functional areas based on allocation tables by percentage of effort that are updated regularly.
