Program areas at Greenpeace
Outreach & education & actions - Greenpeace, Inc. is focused on embedding racial justice, advancing equity within our organization, and integrating it in all areas of our work. In 2022, the number of staff identifying as people of color has tripled since 2013, and those in management positions have more than quadrupled to 45%. Overall, 54% of staff and 77% of our combined boards are people of color, almost twice the percentage of the wider environmental movement. To effectively challenge the systems of power and privilege that destroy the environment, we must meet people where they are, going to the most directly impacted people - workers, people of faith, young people and students, their parents, black, brown, and indigenous communities - and craft solutions together. Only by building resilient, multiracial, multigenerational power will we have what it takes to hold our elected leaders accountable and stand up to corporate power and win. In 2022, Greenpeace, Inc. used several novel approaches for engaging new constituencies and mobilizing even more people overall to help achieve wins for the environment. A few select activities include: * Greenpeace, Inc. Joined a diverse coalition to stop senator joe manchin's dirty deal fast-tracking fossil fuel permits from becoming law three times in the latter half of 2022. * Greenpeace, Inc. and fire drill fridays with jane fonda engaged with 15,000 supporters online monthly before hitting the streets again and taking action together in person again for the first time since before the pandemic in Washington, dc in december 2022. * Greenpeace, Inc. Volunteers sent letters to turn out the vote to potential voters across the country in the lead-up to the 2022 election and runoff election for the Georgia senate. In total, over 2000 Greenpeace, Inc. Volunteers sent over 159,000 letters urging potential voters to turn out for the climate.
Oceans - Greenpeace, Inc. is campaigning for sustainable fisheries and seafood, ocean sanctuaries (marine reserves), and phasing out single-use plastics that are polluting our bodies, land, and oceans. Our campaign leverages the power of large seafood buyers, seafood producers, and governments to improve fisheries management; reduces the amount of plastic pollution entering the ocean; defends seafood workers' rights, and seeks to establish a network of international ocean sanctuaries. 2022 Greenpeace, Inc. Ocean campaign highlights include: we published a new report called "circular claims fall flat again", a sequel to a report we released in 2020. The report found that of the 51 million tons of plastic waste generated by u.s. Households in 2021, only 2.4 million tons were recycled. The fact is that only 5% of plastics are actually being recycled, despite people diligently cleaning and sorting their plastics for recycling.
Climate & energy - Greenpeace, Inc. is campaigning to address climate change. We worked toward a responsible fossil fuel phase-out and a rapid and just transition to a clean energy economy. We support an immediate halt to all new permits and infrastructure for oil and gas exploration and extraction on public lands and waters. We supported policy changes that start the responsible phaseout of all oil and gas production, ensuring a just transition for impacted workers and communities. Finally, our campaign educated citizens on climate policies as compared to scientific predictions and solutions. 2022 Greenpeace, Inc. Climate and energy campaign highlights include: * together with our national allies, environmental justice formations, and our supporters, we created unrelenting pressure on senator schumer and senator manchin and moved a significant bloc of house and senate members to oppose the dirty deal and overpower congressional leadership, and defeated the expansion of fossil fuel. * established the setback distance between neighborhoods and drilling via educating and pushing for the sb 1137 law. This law prevents new oil and gas drilling and rework permits within 3,200 feet of communities and lays the groundwork to phase out drilling in neighborhoods (where nearly 25% of in-state oil and gas production occurs). * stood in solidarity to push the newsom administration who took an important first step toward providing funding for communities and workers impacted by the declining fossil fuel industry with a $40 million displaced oil and gas worker pilot fund included in the 2022 state budget.
