Green City Force (GCF) connects the dots between youth employment and the need to shift to sustainability and equity in our cities, through service rooted in public housing communities in New York City. Through its Service Corps, GCF engages 18 - 24 year old public housing residents with high school diplomas or equivalencies as AmeriCorps members on large-scale environmental initiatives in public housing. GCF teams build and maintain urban farms in NYCHA communities and educate thousands of NYCHA residents about sustainability actions they can take in their homes and communities.
GCF is committed to supporting alumni of its Service Corps as they advance along their career paths. Alongside ongoing support for alumni, GCF designs and operates sectoral training and employment initiatives. In FY 18, GCF employed graduates through a social enterprise approach to retrofit homes for health and safety, energy efficiency and water conservation in NYCHA and low-to-moderate income communities and piloted construction training.
