Program areas at Greater Susqu Valley United Way
Funded programs - support for programs and initiatives targeting solutions for six identified issues: early childhood education, public transportation, drug & alcohol abuse, acceptance of diversity, at-risk teens and poverty. To meet identified community goals, United Way convenes regular trainings and meetings on expected standards and outcomes, and opportunities for networking with other nonprofit organizations and the community-at-large. Alliance fund - resources dedicated to helping individuals and families with utility bills in the city of sunbury and in union county. Early childhood coalition - focused awareness efforts with dedicated staff on the importance of quality early child education and experiences by creating a network of advocates, providing education and volunteer resources to quality early childcare initiatives; inspiring legislative advocacy among the business community of northumberland, snyder and union counties; providing continuing education opportunities for child care providers; and administering programs targeted at improving the quality of care for all children in our service area so that every young child begins kindergarten ready to learn. A collaboration of United Way, early childhood professionals, school districts, community partners and families which all have stake in the early development of every child. Through reasearch, we know that 90% of the brain develops by age five and that quality early educational experiences give the children the foundation they need to later succeed in school and in life.
