Program areas at Governors Highway Safety Association
Behavioral traffic Safety cooperative research - a program administered by nhtsa and jointly managed by ghsa. Ghsa encourages its member states to submit potential research project problem statements and participate in the research projects as panelists each year. The research committee monitors and facilitates the program. At the staff level, the program is supported by ghsa's chief executive officer, senior director of external engagements, and director of programs & member services. Additionally, the national academy of sciences (nas) is part of the committee providing technical expertise and serves as a subrecipient on the project. Nas has been involved with the project forseveral years and very active in other transportation research efforts. This 5-year cooperative agreement began in 2022 and year 1 expires june 2027.
Annual meeting - takes place in a different state each year for five days, typically scheduled between late august to early october. The meeting brings together more than 500 state, national and private sector Highway Safety representatives. The executive board/planning committee, in conjunction with the ghsa team establishes a theme. The host state team, in collaboration with the ghsa team puts the plan in motion. The meeting kicks off on a saturday with an executive board meeting, followed by an all-hands on deck business meeting on sunday, along with a series of general sessions and workshops monday & tuesday. The meeting concludes on wednesday with a closing general session/luncheon.
Safety grant partnerships - programs developed by ghsa in collaboration with partners to provide resources to state Highway Safety offices (shsos) relative to assisting and implementing priority programs and communicating ways to create safer roads.
Providing products & services to shso's - a program in cooperation with the department of transportation, national Highway traffic Safety administration (nhtsa) to enhance and execute a cohesive program providing traffic Safety services to include: a law enforcement program coordinator responsible for providing the technical assistance necessary to increase and strengthen states' law enforcement efforts focused on traffic Safety; encouraging law enforcement agencies to implement and/or expand traffic Safety enforcement, especially high visibility enforcement throughout the year; supporting states in organizing and conducting law enforcement-related events related to crackdowns and mobilization at the state or local level; researching, writing and providing technical information to state Highway Safety offices (shso's).
Consulting services initiative - shso - administered by ghsa, this program provides consulting services that are related to ghsa's mission. The purpose of this service is to: provide training to directors of shso's on the importance of data and advise them of their data related responsibilities. The training courses are at a high, non-technical level and approximately 4 hours in length.
Driving skills for life - a program developed by ford motor company fund, ghsa and Safety experts, seeks to reduce the number of driving injuries and fatalities by helping newly licensed drivers develop the skills necessary for safe driving. The program includes redesigned driving skills for life (dsfl) website, ride and drives, a series of free, hands-on driving events, summer camps where teen drivers and their parents learn critical driving skills, and an educational kit that has been sent to over 20,000 high schools which includes a teacher's guide, entertaining video, brochure, poster, and a take-home component so parents can be involved. Dsfl focuses on four skills experts agree are most important in preventing crashes, when combined with zero tolerance for alcohol use and the importance of seat belt use hazard.
