Overseas Labor Recruitment & Construction: Project Selamat empowers migrant workers in Malaysia throughout the migration journey and reduces the risk of forced labor by developing worker-centric solutions to improve safe migration practices and build the ethical recruitment industry. GFEMS also partnered with IPA Innovations for Poverty Action to carry out research on Project Saksham-an initiative that seeks to reduce rates of forced labor in Indian Construction by engaging Micro-contractors MCs sub-agents in the construction industry who manage a maximum of 40-50 permanent or temporary workers. The research focused on Understanding the Impact of Offering Loans on Labor Trafficking on Project Saksham. With our partner Elevate we worked to enhance traceability methodologies and tools in the cotton and cobalt supply chain via the testing building and publication of a Commodity Traceability Protocol and Commodity Link Platform that will support the replicability and scale of sup
FORCED LABOR IS A PERSISTENT CHALLENGE IN BRAZILS COFFEE SUPPLY CHAIN - The State of Minais Gerais the highest volume coffee producing state in the country consistently leads Brazil in forced labor cases. In response GFEMS invested in a start-up program for a robust anti-trafficking program. The project works by developing tools to address gaps in the existing landscape- A workers level grievance system that offers remediation on farms a network of legal aid clinics focused on slave labor cases training for social assistance public service. This work is done in close coordination with a wide-ranging body of stakeholders particularly with workers lived experience.
Survivor Engagement in the Human Trafficking Sector: GFEMS worked with funding from UK Home office-Modern Slavery Innovation Fund MSIF on a two-pronged effort to improve survivor engagement in the human trafficking sector. In one stream of activity we worked with survivor working groups and hosted World Congress event to advance collaborative survivor-led review and discussions of key issue areas. In the other stream we engaged with survivor advisors to help research institutions adopt recently developed standard operating procedures SOPs for survivor informed research. GFEMS worked with implementing partner organisations in the Kenya Freedom Fund hotspot to introduce them to the Funds framework for Meaningful Engagement for People with Lived Experience of modern slavery and provide technical assistance to each partner to improve and increase engagement of individuals with lived experience.
GFEMS supported population based estimations in select sectors and geographies for purposes of data analysis and assessment of trends.
