Program areas at Glasshouseprojectinc Project
Air program: launched in 2009, the residency program at Glasshouse is designed for professionals in the performance art field (artists, curators and scholars) to deepen their work and research in the field of performance art while engaging with the various communities in/around Glasshouse. Artists are coming from around the world and part of the residency is to create an exchange- with local organizations, community members and the campus community. These exchanges are crafted individually per residency Project and creates ongoing opportunities of cultural exchange. Over the past two years, we've hosted artists sindy butz (germany/us), emilio rojas (mexico), donna kukama (south africa), khadija baker (syria/canada), laurie berg and rae goodwin in our artist-in-residency program. At suny new paltz several artists were invited to speak college following their residency and created long lasting connections with faculty and students. Part of the community outreach offers workshops, for example artist khadija baker led an earthen oven workshop based on her kurdish tradition where participants learnt how to extract clay from the floodplain and build an oven, which now allows wood fired bread to greet guests.
Conversation lab: our newly launched conversation lab is a fellowhsip program that provides a space for conversation through a structured fellowship for local artists and educators. It hosts monthly meetings organized under a yearly theme. Each fellow is responsible for choosing a specific text and leads one conversation. The text serves as the catalyst for close reading and deep, intentional conversation. Each cohort develops a Project drawing from these cumulative interpersonal explorations.
Soup program: Glasshouse's event program(soup=see, organize, understand performance) produces festivals and events that generate research in performance art practice, based on annual themes. These events are free and open to the public. In 2022 we hosted 23 artists under the theme 'the motherhood in motherhood'. A notable event was 'needlework on water' a carolee schneemann outdoor film screening which we produced in collaboration with rosekill, upstate art weekend and the carolee schneemann foundation. The soup program hosted close to 500 audience members annually.
