Description
Silk Road Rising advances Pan-Asian, N African, and Muslim artists' works and deepens the broader community's understanding of their cultures while increasing resources and offering learning opportunities. Silk Road Rising had to cancel its live fall production of Christmas Mubarak due to concerns about new COVID-19 variants and rising cases. Nonetheless, Silk Road Rising provided innovative storytelling programs through its EPIC program by offering 18 residencies to Chicago schools and community organizations during the year.

Program areas at Silk Road Cultural Center

THEATRE: The Organization continued work on three new live theatre projects with the intent to produce them in the coming years. Each of the live theatre projects explores an untold Silk Road story; examining concepts of home, rootedness, and healing. The three projects are titled, The Art of Aphasia, EVE, and Road Less Traveled. The organization is currently exploring new opportunities and engaging in conversations with artists and playwrights.
DIGITAL ARTS: Silk Road Cultural Center first coined the term video play in 2011. This evolving genre is neither a filmed staged play nor a movie, but rather a blended genre that combines the language and aesthetics of live theatre with the technology and accessibility of digital filmmaking. During the last fiscal year, the Organization built their own mobile sound and video studio and is preparing to produce new digital content in the coming year.
Other Program Services include a variety of programs including developing the Polycultural Institute, engaging with the local community, and winding down the education program during the school year.
ARTS SERVICE: The Organization engages in movements that deepen cultural representation and grassroots solidarity. Through their involvement in national arts organizations and alliances, they innovate new models of artmaking, connectivity, and collaboration.
